I rushed the PhiDE chapter at AUA my first semester and joined the international professional medical fraternity. It has been a wonderful experience becoming a part of a big family that has a mission of creating physicians of integrity with a lifelong commitment to the guiding principles of philanthropy, deity, and education through fellowship, service, mentoring, and formal training in leadership, science, and ethics. I love getting involved with my school and the local community and the fraternity has given me that opportunity. All of our fundraisers raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which is a wonderful philanthropic partner of the fraternity that admits and treats all children no matter the cost. My second semester, I was elected to become Vice President of Recruitment. I was responsible for New Member recruitment and current member retention. I organized a dinner and karaoke night to help strengthen our family bond, set up the interview process for prospective new members, and of course their initiation night. Ever since the end of my elected duties, my position in our family has always remained as a trusted leader and adviser to current Executive Boards.

I always got on stage at medical school at least once a week to tell jokes. At first it had a very mixed reception, but as time progressed, my colleagues would always ask for me to tell them impromptu jokes which progressed to telling a joke every Friday. I love making people laugh and in doing so, I help remove a bit of stress that my colleagues and I feel. I have been a member of an improvisation comedy club before and it dawned on me to start one at AUA. I created the pitch to the Student Government Association and it was met with unanimous vote to start it up. I love every moment of the practices we have held just to teach the “games” and to get to know our fellow performers. We have put on shows and would print tickets for students and faculty to buy so that all of the proceeds would go to a charity of our choice (one semester we offered the proceeds to the family of a colleague of mine who had unfortunately drowned and for the last two we have given to the local PAAWS animal shelter, which is incredibly underfunded). It is definitely one of my favorite activities I have been a part of, and I look forward to continuing telling awful jokes and spreading laughs in the future. My position as president has led to my election of becoming host for our school’s talent shows.

I substituted students from Kindergarten to the 12th grade, and really enjoyed working with and teaching them when I can (especially in math and sciences). My previous school teachers, such as my Calculus, Music, and Physics teacher, have all asked me to actually teach their classes since they would be away for meetings or out of state grading AP tests. It is a very exhausting line of work since children are filled with so much energy, but very rewarding too since long-lasting relationships are built while imparting knowledge and having fun in class.

I gained a shadowing opportunity with the physicians I met, during the summer I did research in the NICU in 2007. Together, we went patient to patient with the residents, as I learned about health ailments, treatments, problem-solving skills implemented to diagnose and treat medical mysteries, and ultimately watch how our healthcare system works. I also observed several procedures such as: circumcisions, intubations, a urinary catheterization, IV line insertions, and a surgery to remove a neonate from an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine. This experience was a great opportunity to witness the engagement between the patient (mostly parents) and physician, the healthcare system first-hand and gave me insight to the duties and professionalism learned and performed by the NICU doctors.

I had a very unique and amazing learning experience shadowing Dr. John Kripsak, D.O. at Bridgewater Medical Group in New Jersey. As a general practitioner and sports medicine doctor, he saw a lot of patients come in for routine physicals and musculoskeletal ailments. I watched him practice diagnosing patients through the interview and physical exam process, and utilizing ultrasound to get a better look at bones, ligaments, muscles, and their tendons. Depending on each case, he would then treat his patient using anything from osteopathic manipulative treatment, to utilizing ultrasound to guide proliferation therapy injections to the site of pain. On a case-by-case basis Dr. Kripsak would educate his patient on preventative behaviors, because it always empowered the patient to improve their health. I had informed the staff that I was an EMT as they got to know me, which earned me a hands-on experience taking vitals since the office was getting backed-up due to their conversion to electronic medical records. I had a great time helping them and I gained a lot of satisfaction being able to be a part of the healing process.

Rochester, New York Area

While I was in the process of taking my EMT-Basic certification class in Rochester, I volunteered as a "victim" for an actual EMS practical examination. As I continued to volunteer I was able to learn and memorize the skill evaluation sheets. When I finally obtained my license, I was asked to step in as a skills evaluator due to a night of being short-staffed. Ever since that night I was asked to continue in assisting with various exams through the year, based on when the semester of EMT classes would come to an end. I would set up my particular skills station and if I had a "victim", we would go over the pre-written script for the trauma/medical scenario. I then graded each student, making sure they would pass the critical checkpoints.

I volunteered my time as an EMT-B at Henrietta Volunteer Ambulance located in Rochester, NY. I had a lot of hands-on experiences in dealing with emergency situations, and working with patients to build a rapport so that I can then easily find out what their emergency is and how to best treat them. I enjoy being an EMT, because it requires a lot of quick thinking and problem-solving, keeping me on my feet.

I was requested by Dr. Bochiwe Hara-Kaonga to be a teacher’s assistant the following spring quarter after having taken molecular biology in the winter. Quizzes were given in the beginning of each lab to reinforce the students’ understanding of the science and goal of each lab. I helped prepare reagents for the class and along with my fellow TA, helped students understand the purpose, the procedure, and the results of each lab. I then taught some of the labs as we progressed through the quarter, and helped grade lab notebooks and lab reports.

Newark, Nj

I gathered data from mothers willing to take part in a clinical research project that was being conducted with Columbia University. It was a study to see whether there was a correlation between the mothers’ smoking habits during pregnancy and the size of the placenta. It was theorized that due to the intake of carbon monoxide through smoking, the placenta would be larger in size to aid in supplying more oxygen to the developing baby.

Rochester, New York Area

After getting acquainted with my biology teacher, Dr. Jessa Jones, in the fall of freshman year, I spent my winter quarter with her and my lab colleagues reading research journals about bladder cancer research and epigenetics. We spent a lot of this time talking about methylation of the genome and how it silences genes, but in our scope of research, the tumor suppressor genes of chromosome 9, which had shown a strong correlation with bladder cancer. In the following spring quarter, my lab partner and I created primers that replicated the TRAF2 sequence by using polymerase chain reaction, and tried to find out if the sequence was methylated in the bladder cancer cell line we had received.
