Manage communications to support new ways of working following large-scale changes within the organisation. This includes a communication and change strategy focused on delivering £5 million of savings each year by modernising our buildings and co-locating with partners such as the fire service. Working with the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, local council and emergency service partners is key to ensuring communities and colleagues affected by the changes are consulted and informed as well ensuring force branding, while tone and voice are incorporated into the future look and feel of the builds. Managing the ‘Act with Precision’ strand of the force strategy named This Work Matters which incorporates new technologies and precision data to help us better serve our public. Strategic communications plan includes determining and advising on a long-term vision to up-skill colleagues, introduce new technologies and use tools available to better our service.Internal campaign to increase the feeling of fairness and belonging within the organisation. Continued communication tactics include creating ‘brave space’ forums where colleagues are invited to talk openly about issues linked to diversity and inclusion, such as our use of powers and positive action steps aimed to recruit, progress and retain colleagues who represent the communities we serve. Working with Blast TV Production on the new series of BBC Two: Forensics, The Real CSI involves managing the six-month long filming which includes balancing demands of multiple producers and their filming requests against both colleague, victims and families in being filmed and shadowed.

Responsibilities included managing all internal communications for colleagues while supporting the senior policing leadership team in an advisory role. Responsible for the management and delivery of colleague borough newsletter to keep everyone up to date with latest changes and personal staff stories. Effectively responded to local media enquiries following policing incidents and established our local WMNow network made up of people who live in the borough who either volunteered to take part in neighbourhood activities such as litter picks or speed awareness, or who signed up to receive and share policing updates with others. Developed a stakeholder contact list and strong working relationships with local council contacts and other emergency services as well as businesses, educational establishments and existing social groups to effectively target communications following incidents which may affect a specific area or group of people. Encouraging a two-way relationship also helped feed information back into local policing teams which may have been missed through traditional contact channels.

Worked shifts on our busy and demanding newsdesk managing calls from the media, colleagues and partners. The role involved working under pressure to draft responses to media enquiries and appeals for information and manage reputational risk. Organising briefings in media room or at scenes of crime involved fielding and managing media demand as well as ensuring senior leads delivering appeals were well briefed with key messages, potential questions and wider force issues which could play into the narrative. The role also included working alongside family liaison officers to support families with their messaging and media requests while protecting them from intrusion. Experience in effectively using media, social media and other community message channels to support the force strategy and help to lower reputational risk both in times of crisis - such as higher than expected crime patterns, regional or national crimes which impact on the safety of a particular group or incidents resulting in serious case reviews - and pre-planned operations like game fixtures or protests.
