About Jathan Merkel, Mba
As an analyst and developer, leveraging business experience with innovation isn't just a skill—it comes naturally. My 5-year background in a medical device startup provided me with a comprehensive understanding of virtually every business area such as finance, operations, IT, corporate governance, and investor relations. This level of understanding, combined with the opportunity to work closely with the founder and vice president, provided the ability to manage the big picture while knowing the details. With this foundation, I stepped out into a broader healthcare environment where I explored a larger financial and operational picture. I immediately discovered a massive opportunity for efficiencies and organizational growth by introducing more and better data. This discovery fueled my passion to break out of traditional financial operations and use my startup experience with analytical talent to bring new data solutions into focus. Having real business experience has proved invaluable. My nature is to be challenged and provide solutions, even if it means pioneering new methods and ideas. Helping people think differently with data is extremely rewarding.

Business Intelligence Developer
Having amassed a deep wealth of knowledge on the business side over the past decade, gave me a solid foundation of how a business operates, makes financial decisions, and develops strategies for growth in the ever-changing healthcare industry. Spending time in an ambulatory group supporting the primary care service line showed me the challenges facing the organization as the industry shifts to value-based care. These challenges opened up an opportunity for me to address and provide solutions.I joined a population health analytics team of 5 that's pioneering new methods for delivering actionable financial and clinical data for the business. Here I'm able to hone my technical skills with data and leverage business acumen to develop the next generation of healthcare solutions using predictive analytics and business intelligence.Key contributions ushered in so far are technical and strategic. Predictive analytics are new to the organization and I'm actively leading in the development of a partnership to create a vision for our 8-member governance committee. This will provide a roadmap and collaboration needed for implementing and reporting on predictive models so that the organization is effective at driving change. Reporting around the first model will be delivered to 108 stakeholders across 7 teams. One of the greatest technical achievements for our team and organization was pioneering the first Power BI healthcare financial dashboard as a direct alternative to Tableau. This claims-based dashboard was accepted by one of the largest healthcare EHR software companies (Epic Systems) in the U.S. Over 100+ organizations in their community will directly benefit. Microsoft has recognized this achievement as being the first Power BI solution accepted by Epic Systems. After developing the dashboard, I implemented and trained 16 stakeholders across 4 teams around the organization.
Financial Analyst
Contributions in my previous role led to a transition into finance where I continued to support primary care with month-end close and introducing more actionable data. Here I discovered over $500K in annual physician productivity savings, built proformas for physician/practice acquisitions and collaborated on a team of 5 to develop a $100M+ budget by building staffing, physician compensation and revenue projections for the service line. I then led in the development of a $26M redesigned compensation model using PCP panels, which better aligned with population health. During these accomplishments I gathered data and developed over 10 new reports, automating ≈50% based on requested needs. The next stage during this period involved supporting more growth initiatives for executive leadership. The first of three key contributions was developing and automating a 10-year FTE physician succession model that replaced a manual one so the ambulatory group could better project for the entire network more quickly. Second, I automated a hardcoded spreadsheet using Power Pivot that supported 5 unique data sources in a multifaceted data model. This report was used for planning and executing infrastructure growth within primary care. Both of these contributions reduced reporting time from 1-2 months to daily/weekly real-time needs. The final stage of this period was the third key contribution involving the assessment of the southwestern Ohio market for network growth opportunities. Network leadership hired consultants to better position the organization for value-based care. Because of my recent successful outcomes using data within primary care I was seen as an expert resource to lead in the data model development and analysis. The result was a Power Pivot solution that combined internal PCP panels and compared against third-party population data for panel growth opportunities. I shared the summary results to ambulatory leadership and consultants shared with network leadership.
Business/Data Analyst
Having spent time in an ambulatory group gaining exposure to operations and leadership's focus, I was recruited to provide support between finance and operations within the primary care service line. In this role I functioned as a business/data analyst where I immediately ushered in new staffing ratio benchmarks for 43 primary care practices to better manage FTEs. I quickly discovered this service line and its leadership lacked actionable data when making decisions so I created several financial and operational reports for leadership and colleagues. This led to the founding of 2 attribution models for primary care patient panels. These panels served as a standard used by finance, operations and quality.During this time I proactively sought new methods and tools to bring value to the service line. This included learning Excel's self-service BI tools and how to write Microsoft T-SQL to improve data gathering and shorten the reporting timeframe. I was able to provide new actionable data much quicker than before, which helped 15-20 stakeholders across 4 teams.
Sr. Administrative Fellow
After working in the medical device industry for a startup, I wanted to explore how a hospital network operated that would give me a larger picture of the healthcare industry. After meeting with the executive leadership and talking with the network's CFO, I accepted a role to learn more. In this position I rounded with various hospital teams such as revenue cycle and patient access. On the ambulatory side I spent time learning operations in multiple service lines such as primary care, orthopedics, women's services, urgent care, general surgery, urology and cardiology. This provided insight into the integration of a hospital network and ambulatory group. My rotations were cut short when the ambulatory group's president requested my assistance to perform a study on the independent primary care physicians (PCPs) in the market and determine the opportunity for better alignment by service line. This involved reviewing data of over 1,000 PCPs and segmenting more than $1 billion in referral market revenue. The findings were then presented to the ambulatory group executive leadership resulting in a continued focus to expand the primary care service line and offering more specialty services. This experience generated a roadmap for future opportunities.
