KEY RESULTS• Developed novel heavy oil upgrading and desulfurization technology from conception to pilot plant demonstration. Authored three U.S. patents on different aspects of the process. The technology has been commercialized under the trade name of CLEANSEAS and a 2,500 bpd heavy oil upgrading demonstration plant is under construction in Alberta, Canada.• Designed and operated a 10-bpd heavy oil upgrading facility in Edmonton, Canada to demonstrate technology feasibility and to aid in the scale-up of a 2,500 bpd demonstration plant. • Developed an electrolytic process to recover sodium metal and elemental sulfur from a sodium sulfide-containing stream using a ceramic ionic transport membrane. Scaled up the process from proof of concept to pilot plant scale. • Designed and constructed a novel low temperature electrolytic cell to recover molten sodium metal from a stream of sodium sulfide. Optimized cell design and performance during the development period to minimize operational and capital costs.• Conducted process simulations and cost analysis for full-scale heavy oil upgrading facilities. • Prepared techno-economic analysis and process simulation of electrochemical generation of ammonia fuel for grid storage applications • Investigated electrolyte liquid systems for low temperature sodium-sulfur rechargeable batteries. -
