Javier Rivera DeBruin (they/them) is a playwright and impact producer with 10 years of experience in audience engagement and leveraging the arts to support social change. Javi is a founding partner with the impact production company Red Owl, helmed by former public media engagement executive Eliza Licht. As a writer and impact producer Javi engages with themes of queer and trans liberation, racial equity, gender justice, mental health, technology, mass incarceration, and environmental justice. In their time at Red Owl, Javier has supported 30+ campaigns to strategize, implement, and/or evaluate impact in the sphere of documentary and hybrid film, theater, performance art, and journalism. Some recent collaborators include ITVS, New Orleans Film Festival, Futuro Media Group (Pulitzer Prize winner), Sundance Institute, UNION (U.S. Doc. Special Jury Award for the Art of Change at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival), COMMUTED (PBS WORLD Channel), THE COMMAND CENTER TO BRING WOMEN HOME (Independent Lens), COLLEGE BEHIND BARS (PBS), GOING VARSITY IN MARIACHI, PHILLY D.A. (Peabody Award winner), NO STRAIGHT LINES (Independent Lens), and DISCLOSURE (GLAAD media award winner, Netflix). Javier came to impact producing by way of theater, where they have implemented fundraising and audience engagement tactics for broadway and regional non-profit theater with Roundabout Theatre Company and Center Theatre Group. As a playwright their work has been developed and produced for stage and audio by National Queer Theater, The Parsnip Ship, and MCC Theater. Their play LUCIÉRNAGAS was a NY Times Critic’s Pick during its World Premiere with National Queer Theater at the 14th St Y. Javi holds a BA in Theatre and Latin American Studies from Smith College. In all their work Javier endeavors to create reciprocal mechanisms that make space for audiences to envision themselves as storytellers in their own right.
