As Development and Communications Director, I am responsible for actively supporting the fundraising and communications activities of Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA). I work closely with the Executive Director, the Board Chair and board members to identify, solicit and steward gifts in support of USARA’s mission. This includes but is not limited to assisting in the annual appeal, major gift solicitation, writing grants, planned giving, strategic planning and planning events. An integral and essential role of my position is the development of effective, targeted communications to all stakeholder groups, continually seeking to inform and inspire. As Development and Communications Director, I also plan and implement public relations and marketing activities aimed to continually raise the visibility of the organization in the community, including but not limited to the website and social media.

As development director, my primary responsibility is to raise money for the organization. I implement the organization’s development plan that details how the organization solicits donors and identifies funding sources such as grants, in-kind donations, charitable events and marketing opportunities. This plan is shared with the executive director and the board of directors. As the governing body for my organization, the board of directors provides oversight and leadership. As development director I also spend time personally soliciting donors and cultivating relationships. As such, strong relationship building and solicitation skills are important.In collaboration with the executive director and the controller, I also prepare annual budgets for our organization various lines of business. The budget details the cash required to fund programs, as a general rule, budgets should be realistic, consistent and measurable. As director of development, I provide detailed information about how much money must be raised to meet budget criteria. Our budget must be approved by the executive director and the board of directors before it is implemented.

In cooperation with the executive director and the community engagement coordinator, I am also responsible for branding and advertising. This concept, critical to successful fundraising endeavors, focuses on a strategy that expands the target audience through community relations, speaking engagements, newsletters and charitable events.
