IDEA-FAST is a research project that explores how data captured from multiple sensing devices can be used to provide objective and reliable digital measures for fatigue and sleep disturbances across a range of neurodegenerative or immune-mediated diseases. My role has involved:• Led a team of two software engineers to develop systems to automate data transfer from sensing devices and a mobile application to support patients engaging in a research study.• Wireframed a mobile application to visualise data created from wearing multiple sensing devices to incentivise when patients wear devices without revealing health data.• Setup a containerised infrastructure for development and to provide ongoing support, e.g., ticketing (zammad) and surveys (limesurvey).• Supervised MSc and BSc student's dissertations on a range of topics, including: (i) designing interactions with and visualising health data from multiple sensing devices; and (ii) visualising social media usage data to support self-reflection on well-being.

Open Lab, Newcastle University

• Applied participatory research methods to iteratively design, develop, and evaluate five digital prototypes to enhance and explore the qualitative research process of practitioners in small (12 participants) and large-scale (600+) studies.• Designed and developed a digital platform (Gabber) that structures the capture and annotation of audio interviews, annotating the audio directly as the analysis stage, and using analysed snippets to share insights through audio playlists.• Led co-research deployments and embedded fieldwork with organisations that include: (i) the National Health Service (NHS); (ii) a charity that delivers services to vulnerable adults; and (iii) the world’s largest humanitarian network (IFRC).• Evaluated field deployments using qualitative (e.g., interviews, Wizard of Oz) and quantitative (e.g., log analysis) methods.

Idea-Fast, Open Lab

• Led the systematic usability evaluation of 24 commercial and medical-grade sensing devices and associated software for monitoring health that informed which devices were selected for a clinical trial feasibility study.• Designed and delivered workshops to academics, clinicians, and manufacturers of sensing devices to capture expert user-experience reviews on the look, comfort, and feel of these sensing devices to inform the device selection process.• Co-led a public engagement of 100+ participants to evaluate the experience wearing these devices across 4 dance sessions. • Applied mixed methods to gather evidence across these engagements, e.g., questionnaires, workshops, and interviews.

Institute Of Neuroscience

• Researched and designed WellnessTalk, a digital prototype that uses aggregated data from mobile application usage to support personal reflection on how individual's digital and offline habits impact their mental health and wellbeing.• Designed, scripted, and coordinated the voice-over and production of a video concept to illustrate the problem space, research question, and design response (WellnessTalk) to inform discussions between clinicians and the general public.

Geneva Area, Switzerland

• Designed and led a digital campaign to support the IFRC Secretariat capturing perspectives from volunteers across their global network about the future of the Red Cross Red Crescent and integrating the network’s perspectives into their ten-year vision (https://future-rcrc.com). • Managed a team of 2 developers and 1 designer to add features (e.g. internationalize) and rebrand Gabber (the technology platform developed through my PhD) to TalkFutures.• Deployed TalkFutures globally in 4 languages (Arabic, French, Spanish, English), resulting in 11 1⁄2 hours of interviews from 86 countries being captured, and 9 reports written by participants (see links below for examples).• Managed and supported participants of campaign through WhatsApp groups.• TalkFutures has since went on to be used by other societies in the Red Cross Red Crescent, e.g. by IFRC Americas to support discussion between volunteers around region-specific topics to inform discussion in a regional conference. • Developed a web-based prototype to research how data captured during user onboarding in an online hiring platform (Mooqita) could better match students with companies. • Mooqita is a start-up that extends online learning courses by offering additional challenges to e-learners that are developed with industrial partners. • Interviewed staff from companies to evaluate the utility of data captured for use by them during screening of applicants.Skills: JavaScript (MeteorJS), web design, Qualitative research (interviews, design workshops).

• Exploratory research project developing an autonomous SMS chat service – structured using brief motivational interventions – to invoke reflection from participants about their recent visit to an Alcohol Treatment Centre (ATC). • Developed a content-management system for nurses in the ATC to gather patient data was also developed with a focus on simplicity and quick data entry.Skills: Python (Flask, SocketIO, SQL, Twilio's REST API), web-design (HTML5, CSS3, bootstrap).

Designed and developed cross-platform desktop features for searching, downloading and publishing research data by scientists at ISIS (Neutron and Muon Source) and ORNL in Mantid, a framework and desktop application for visualizing materials science data.A selection of the core features implemented and other activities during this role include:• Designed and developed a new interface that enables scientists to search for and access their experiment data directly, independent of platform and when off-site – previously only Windows was supported and access to files over the Intranet.• First use of the STFC’s Information Data Service (IDS) REST API to publish data files (raw, reduced, logs & analysed) from Mantid to the relevant experiment archive for access and modification by collaborators.• Implemented DOI generation for published data upon request, which allows researchers to cite their analysed experiment data from within their publications.• Redesigned and developed the Mantid downloads website to automatically update download links for each release – nightly builds and major releases.Skills: C++ (libraries: boost, QT, & poco, tech: SOAP, REST), Python, git, and TDD (Jenkins & code-reviews).
