About Jay Augustine
Dr. Jonathan C. Augustine (a/k/a Jay Augustine) is a seasoned, multidisciplinary professional, with academic expertise in law, theology, and higher education administration. He serves as senior pastor of St. Joseph AME Church (Durham, NC) and as a member of the faculty at Hampton University. He previously served as senior pastor of Historic St. James AME Church (New Orleans) and, since January 2017, has also served as general chaplain of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He has taught at North Carolina Central University Law School and Duke Divinity School, where he is also served as a member of the Board of Visitors. He is also a former member of the faculties of Southern University Law Center and Jarvis Christian University. An award winning author and former civil rights litigator, Dr. Augustine’s books include, “When Prophets Preach: Leadership and the Politics of the Pulpit” (Fortress Press, 2023) and “Called to Reconciliation: How the Church Can Model Justice, Diversity and Inclusion” (Baker Academic, 2022). His scholarly writings appear in publications including, the Howard Law Journal, University of Richmond Law Review, Connecticut Public Interest Law Journal, Louisiana Law Review, the Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal, and Theology Today, among others. A former infantry officer in the United States Army (1994-98), he twice received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service (2024 & 2017), previously received the "Nation's Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40 Award,” from the National Bar Association, the "Ten Outstanding Young Americans Award" from the United States Jaycees, and the "30 Leaders of the Future" recognition from Ebony magazine. Dr. Augustine is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and received the Fraternity’s “Outstanding Alumni Brother of the Year” Award (2017). He is also proud member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
