Jay Barnes is an author and historian living in Raleigh, N.C. For more nearly thirty years he has written about hurricanes, including Fifteen Hurricanes that Changed the Carolinas, North Carolina's Hurricane History (fourth edition), Florida's Hurricane History (second edition), and Faces From the Flood: Hurricane Floyd Remembered, co-authored with former NC State Treasurer Richard Moore (all from UNC Press). He also published Hurricane Hazel in the Carolinas (Arcadia Publishing). As a hurricane historian, Jay lectures widely on U.S. hurricanes, and has appeared in various productions for the Weather Channel, History Channel, Discovery Channel, and other news and media outlets. He's an occasional contributor to Our State and Wildlife in NC magazines.Jay is the former President & CEO of the nonprofit North Carolina Aquarium Society. Prior to his 2023 retirement, he had worked with the Aquariums since 1980 and was Director of the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores for more than twenty years. He is a graduate of N.C.
