Conceived on Johnny and the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown’s bed in Leadville, my life began. I grew up during World War II living with my parents until my dad was drafted, then at my grandmother’s home in Denver. My step grandfather was a strict man who taught me manners. I lived not far from the city park and enjoyed the gigantic dinosaur stimulating my interest in science. I attended 10 different schools by 6th grade. I was a miserable student until of Mrs. Rosich taught me how to read in the third grade. My life blossomed with books. Biographies of famous Americans led me to want to be successful. My performance in school was average until my father told me,” If you don’t have at least a B average, there will be no help with college. My last year in high school I was an A student, a spring board diver: two records never broken, and wanting to be a veterinarian. I was one of four high school graduates in my neighborhood of at least 20 youngsters; got a job in the steel mill. My friends couldn’t believe I was going to go to college when I had such a good job at Inland Steel as machine operator. At Purdue my best friend who also was a Pre Vet student; it turned out he had Hodgkins. After Bill died, I realized that while I loved animals, I really liked people a lot more. His death convinced me that Vet school was not going to be enough for me that I should go to medical school. My father essentially was disgusted with this decision since he knew railroader sons could never become doctors. I was lucky though and got a place at Duke in the class of 1969.
