I am currently on a data sabbatical, strengthening my skills in programming, machine learning and statistical modeling. In my practice as an anthropologist, design researcher and product strategist, I work within a humanistic and interpretive social science tradition helping teams and organizations surface and apply insights about people. Qualitative research of this kind can deliver deep insights, but typically requires working with small datasets collected through field research. Today most organizations have ready access to massive amounts of data about their users, and they look to the techniques of machine learning and predictive analytics to surface actionable insights from that data. By strengthening my ability to work within a computational data analytics paradigm, I want to contribute to bridging the gap between the qualitative methods of the ethnographer and the algorithmic approach of the modern data scientist.

As Research Strategist in the central Design Innovation Group, my first project was to lead a new initiative reimagining how Intuit’s data practitioners and product design teams can work together. Extensive ethnographic research conducted across the entire organization helped us develop a holistic understanding of how data and data insights move through an environment shaped equally by technology infrastructure, organizational culture and social relationships. As a result we identified a number of opportunity areas for improving how we deliver data and data insights about our users into the hands of our product teams. Our work has now shifted to prototyping simpler more intuitive data interaction tools that experience designers and product managers can use to gain deeper insight about our current and future customers.
At Ricoh Innovations Inc. I worked as a design researcher exploring new concepts for products and services of interest to Ricoh Company Ltd., a global technology company based in Tokyo. For 4 years our scrappy team of coders, designers and ethnographers conducted a series of projects in which we took up residence for 3-4 months inside the offices of a small or medium-sized business, surveyed the pain points people faced in their work, selected one, and developed a functioning prototype of a new product or service to improve that aspect of their work. Design research methods such as contextual inquiry, co-design, and initial low-fidelity prototyping (along with some amazing programmers) enabled us to rapidly develop and make available to our users a functioning prototype. Direct observations of use, analysis of usage data generated by instrumentation, and a rich contextual understanding of our users’ needs allowed us to iterate on our design until we arrived at a strong understanding of the most important values that users wanted and needed from such a product or service. Our work was critical for helping our global organization make strategic decisions about opportunities for developing new products and services in Ricoh’s core area of workplace productivity tools, as well as entering entirely new verticals such as medicine and retail technologies.
At Sinocentric I delivered personalized consulting services to American companies on matters related to conducting business and building relationships in China. Drawing on experiences working for Chinese companies in the Mainland, in Taiwan and in the United States, as well as on 8 years of experience living in China, I supported clients on a range of business issues by providing strategic research and analysis as well as interpreting and translation services.
