People sometimes ask me why I list this publication on my experience page. Well, aside from the fact that it is a little offbeat, most people would be surprised to know that in 1977 the National Enquirer was the highest paying newspaper in the country and the annual salary for a reporter was the same as a starting first year associate at Cravath, Swaine and Moore. The starting salary did not include bonuses, for which there were many opportunities nor the ability for a young man to see the country at the behest of the Enquirer.I subsequently took a job as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of New York while taking more than a 50% pay cut, a fact that impresed a number of the people who were interviewing me at the Corporation Counsel's office.
