    Fundamental is a fund comprised of the best value, opportunistic, or event driven hedge funds that we have been able to assemble over the last 17 years. Although half our team is comprised of wizened veterans, they weren't veterans when we allocated to them. For example we allocated to Greenlight in 1997 when the fund had $7.0 mm under management. New allocations tend to go to emerging value managers with robust professional experience and solid analytical skill. Emerging managers frequently have less in assets under management small size and, therefore are better able to exploit the inefficient niches of the marketplace. On the margins we at Fundamental look for outsized risks or opportunities that might be exploited by allocating to a specialized manager. For example Fundamental LP allocated to a manager of levered subprime mortgage shorts (ABX contracts) in the spring of 2007. In 2008 Fundamental LP allocated to a financial services sector portfolio that was short regional bank stocks with rotten commercial loans. Both investments considerably augmented the performance of our team.
