We have reduced our manual monthly task count from 4,500 to under 50. We have also developed workload tracking tools that give our leadership and customers insight into the work we do.

Manage a staff of six professionals. The department’s primary mission is to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of information systems and system modifications that satisfy the business requirements of the underwriting and rating function at Highmark. This includes assisting the operational departments in defining and documenting business requirements; working with Information Systems staff to accurately translate business requirements into a technical design; and overall project management. Underwriting Support also designs, builds and implements end-user decision support tools. Such tools are built by extracting data using SAS and Microsoft Access. A typical decision support tool is built by extracting data using SAS; summarizing the data; performing calculations; and presenting the results in an easy to use GUI.

Design and build data processing systems, decision support systems, and reports to facilitate the actuarial and underwriting functions. Design and build mainframe (COBOL, SyncSort, SAS, IMS, VSAM) and microcomputer (Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Excel) based data processing systems and control systems to improve data gathering and analysis within Actuarial Services. Administrator for four user groups on a Banyan Vines Local Area Network. Recommend and facilitate the purchase and installation of personal computer workstations and software. Provide problem resolution support for computer users within the Risk Management division. Provide systems support for several legacy APL systems.

Design, code, test, and implement enhancements to the OSCAR processing system using COBOL, Assembly language, IMS, DB2, VSAM, ISPF Dialog, and SyncSort. Research and repair problems within OSCAR.
