Controlling phosgene based polycarbonate synthesis reactions in a small scale industrial style lab setting, and testing end product for reaction completion and purity.

During my time as a masters student in Dr.Tom Hammond's lab at Illinois State university. My primary research focus was on a selfish genetic element capable of meiotic drive known as Spore killer, Sk, in the plant pathogen Fusarium verticillioides. F. verticillioides is known to produce fumonisin mycotoxins in maize food and feed stocks and has been linked with increased rates of human cancer and neural tube associated birth defects. Our lab's research intends to utilize an Sk element as a possible means of reducing levels of fumonisins throughout wild populations.I was also involved in the research of a genome defense mechanism in Neurospora crassa known as Meiotic Silencing by Unpaired DNA (MSUD). MSUD is believed to identify unpaired DNA between homologous chromosomes during N. crassa's short meiotic phase. This unpaired DNA is then directed through what seems to be a traditional RNAi pathway which leads to the generation of MSUD associated small interfering RNA (masiRNA) and the elimination of mRNA from the unpaired DNA and all homologous copies of that DNA in the genome. My research is attempting to better understand the mechanism behind the homology searching portion of MSUD and to attempt to define the capabilities of MSUD's ability to detect unpaired repetitive DNA sequences and inverted repeat transgenes.

My responsibilities included regular quality control analysis of product compositions e.g. protein, fat, and moisture. I was also responsible for microbiological contamination testing of products, mycotoxin contamination, and environmental testing. I assisted in the review and development of Standard Operating Procedures for the lab, and was responsible for implementing new testing procedures.
