About Jay Sorensen

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Iowa. My research and teaching interests include gender studies, critical studies on men and masculinities, critical femininities and femme theory, popular culture, and drug use and harm reduction. I am a teaching-focused scholar with seven years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level, including six independently taught courses. I am passionate about liberal arts education and believe that social science is relevant and beneficial to all students, regardless of major or career aspiration. I have expertise in qualitative research methods and have advanced skill in survey design and using MAXQDA and Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software. I am currently a Ballard and Seashore Dissertation Fellow completing my dissertation on cisgender women and AFAB (assigned female at birth) individuals who perform as drag queens. This is a qualitative study utilizing semi-structured interviews and inductive analysis informed by grounded theory. I currently have a sample of 15 participants from the US, the UK, Canada, and the Netherlands.
