Soil chemist and data scientist interested in finding new ways to approach and solve our world's resource challenges. I spend a lot of time thinking about how incentive structures and our ability as a society to ask the right questions translates into the way the world manifests around us. My analytical experience involves plant nutrient and soil contaminant fate and transport assessment using a variety of wet chemical and synchrotron-based methods. As a data scientist, I have successfully led small coalitions of scientists and data scientists to develop and execute on innovative products and programs through the use of machine learning in the field of greenhouse gas emissions accounting/reduction.Author of one of the Journal of Environmental Quality's most cited and most read papers:"A Review of the Latest in Phosphorus Fertilizer Technology: Possibilities and Pragmatism"Available here (open access): https://doi.org/10.2134/jeq2019.02.0067

Data Scientist, SourceIndigo Aug 2021 - Feb 2024Boston, Ma, Us• Combined academic literature, agronomic expertise, and other sources to design, validate, and sell low greenhouse gas emitting corn, soy, and winter wheat sourcing programs to clients (e.g., consumer packaged goods brands)• Fused a variety of different data sources (e.g., remote sensing, weather, etc.) into clean datasets used for analysis and model training. • Led the development of innovative methods and models to simulate the potential greenhouse gas reduction potential of Indigo’s sustainable sourcing programs• Implemented machine learning and other statistical techniques to estimate life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from corn, soy, and winter wheat fields at field and regional scales -
Soil Scientist / Data ManagerIndigo Oct 2019 - Aug 2021Boston, Ma, Us• Led the transformation of a disordered soil data collection endeavor into a well-functioning, quality-controlled system that has contributed to the generation of >160,000 verified carbon credits to date.• Worked with data analysts to develop dashboards and published regular internal stakeholder updates that provided visibility into the health of a multi-state soil sampling operation.• Wrote SQL queries and built consolidated views in Snowflake to enable easy internal access to clean data that was reliable for downstream use (e.g., modeling, business forecasts, etc.)• Developed, executed, and analyzed experiments to improve soil sampling/analysis protocols• Managed relationships and contracts with external commercial laboratories on behalf of several internal scientific groups -
Technical Project AssociateKansas State University Jun 2018 - Oct 2019Manhattan, Ks, Us• Produced and co-hosted the “Something to Chew On” podcast (available on all major platforms: iTunes, Apple Podcasts, etc.) where Dr. Scott Tanona, Dr. Maureen Olewnik, and I interviewed K-State faculty members and visiting university guests about their work and ideas as related to food systems. Topics spanned from the origins of plants, to crop diseases that threaten modern agriculture, to the philosophical underpinnings of the concept of security• Other responsibilities included workshop development/logistics and facilitation of cross-disciplinary networking amongst university researchers -
Graduate Research Assistant - Ph.D. - Soil & Environmental ChemistryKansas State University Jun 2012 - May 2019Manhattan, Ks, Us• Researched phosphorus fertilizer reaction chemistry in P fixing soils to uncover mechanisms that can be leveraged to produce practices and/or products that improve crop P use efficiency • Investigated unconventional methods to alter phosphorus chemistry for improved plant uptake on calcium-rich and tropical soils • Applied soil wet chemical and synchrotron-based analysis techniques to determine nutrient fate and transport as it relates to agricultural applications• Managed soil chemistry laboratory operations including coordination of activities with partnering researchers, analytical instrument maintenance, and materials acquisition• Successfully co-authored small grants to obtain funding from industry/Fluid Fertilizer Foundation and proposals for allocated synchrotron beamtime at national laboratories -
Graduate Teaching AssistantKansas State University Jan 2013 - Dec 2015Manhattan, Ks, UsResponsible for the instruction of lab sections, lecture review sessions, activity development, and assessments for an entry level soils course. Topics addressed included soil physical, biological, and chemical properties along with appropriate management considerations. -
FarmhandWagner Farms Jun 2004 - Aug 2012Operated farm machinery in order to complete a variety of tasks including dairy cattle feed production and manure management. Milked cows using NuPulse machines in a pipeline, tie-stall system. Completed other responsibilities essential to farm operation, such as stacking hay, feeding livestock, and repairing equipment, as well as providing basic medicinal services.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant - Soil Management For SustainabilityCornell University Jan 2012 - May 2012Ithaca, Ny, UsIn this position, I worked one-on-one with Dr. Harold van Es to facilitate lab setup, demonstrations, lectures, and administrative tasks in a second tier soil management course. Material ranged from physical, biological and chemical soil properties to management techniques and progressive agricultural systems. -
Lab TechnicianCornell Soil Health Team May 2010 - Aug 2011• Measured physical indicators of soil health to assist growers in managing their crop production systems more efficiently and assess progress towards soil health goals
-
InternshipZz2 Dec 2010 - Jan 2011Greater Letaba, Limpopo, ZaThis internship allowed me to experience farm activities in the areas of tomato, avocado, livestock, and onion production through observation and hands on participation. Over the three week internship, I was tasked with developing a suite of recommendations aimed to integrate current tomato and livestock systems in order to align more closely with ZZ2’s mission towards sustainability known as Natuurboerdery. -
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant - Field Cropping SystemsCornell University Aug 2010 - Dec 2010Ithaca, Ny, UsAs an undergraduate teaching assistant I worked with a small team that was responsible for laboratory setup, instruction, and quiz administration in an entry level field crop systems course. Instructional emphasis was placed on plant identification, crop physiology, production system management, and elementary research tools/methods.
