Master’S Thesis

Garching, Bavaria, Germany

As a part of my masters degree program in Aerospace Engineering at TUM, I have successfully completed my masters thesis at the institute for Rotorcraft and powered lift vehicles.Title: Investigation of Thermal load effects on flax and carbon/flax hybrid composite aircraft structures. Grade: 1.7The key features of this thesis were:1. Formulated and implemented a high-fidelity three-dimensional finite element model for thermal stress analysis in Flax Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Composites (FFREC).2. Conducted a systematic investigation into the enhanced thermal resilience of hybrid flax-carbon composite systems.3. Investigated the anisotropic thermal response mechanisms and quantified inter-laminar stress distributions in FFREC structures.4. Performed comprehensive quantitative analysis of tensile strength and stiffness degradation in FFREC under elevated thermal conditions.5. Developed and validated advanced numerical models for non-linear damping characteristics using both frequency-domain and time-domain methodologies.6. Employed the Half Power Bandwidth method to derive empirically-validated damping loss factors across a broad temperature spectrum.7. Validation of simulation models against extant literature, ensuring high fidelity in temperature-dependent material behavior predictions.8. Characterised the temperature-induced brittle-ductile transition phenomena in FFREC materials through multi-scale analysis.9. Conducted in-depth investigation into the thermal stress susceptibility of transversely oriented fiber composites, identifying critical failure modes.10. Established a comprehensive framework for temperature-dependent damping behavior in FFREC, with specific application to vibration and acoustic control scenarios.11. Rotor blade surface modelling and composite modelling in Catia V5 to analyse the feasibility of FFRP as aviation standard material.
