About Jay Carter

Jay Carter is an African American conservationist, human activist, and a former foreign English teacher who taught in Dongguan, China. In 2005, Jay became an AmeriCorps and Student Conservation Association (S.C.A.) Ambassador and Alumni. In 2006, Jay landed his first conservation project with S.C.A. as a TRRO Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) known as "Trailblazers". Jay went on to work with local and federal government agencies managing and overseeing aspects of public safety projects, park programs and recreational facilities, while promoting outdoor campaign initiatives and increasing community relations. In 2012, Jay was elected as a S.C.A. Ambassador to support national and local communities on achieving their environmental goals. In 2015, Jay served under the U.S. Department of Interior as 1 of 70 Centennial Ambassadors selected to improve and expand the National Park Service's sites by engaging youth, minorities and park constituents in community building initiatives, preserving historical artifacts, and increasing park users in outdoor recreations. In 2016, Carter was hired as a S.C.A. Park Ranger Supervisor co-operated and led by the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Parks and Recreation. Jay patrolled and educated park users about environmental impacts, recreational activities, community services, wildlife habitats and public safety. In April 2017, Jay volunteered before working for the People for Peduto Mayoral campaign as a Field Leader to reelect Bill Peduto by 96%. Later that year, Jay was hired as a Program Coordinator for the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Safety, launching the first African American Conservationists' Exhibit for Pittsburgh's residents. Jay continues to advocate for environmental policies that protects basic human rights and wildlife habitats. In 2013, Jay Carter wrote a powerful op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette titled, "Preserve the Power of America's Parks​." On July 16, 2016, Mr. Carter spoke at the Pittsburgh Allegheny Commons in Pennsylvania for the "Let's Move" campaign launched by former, First Lady, Michelle Obama to encourage youth to explore the outdoors alongside Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, CitiParks, S.C.A., Y.M.C.A. and Pittsburgh former Mayor Bill Peduto. In 2017, Carter became a certified TEFL teacher in China and in 2020, returned to the United States following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Jay remains focused on the next chapter of his life as he makes Pittsburgh his home-base.

    Jay Carter is a former S.C.A. and AmeriCorps Alumni and Ambassador. In 2005, Jay got his start in conservation work as a national crewmember at the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania. Jay restored and designed recreational trails, while conducting wildlife habitat assessments along the Appalachians from Ohio to Maine in 2007. 2008, Jay participated in S.C.A.'s EarthVision event in Washington, D.C. to address environmental causes in the U.S. regarding air pollution and energy consumption. In 2009, Carter flew to Haleakala National Park in Maui, Hawaii to help rebuild the entrance of the Pipiwai Trail & Waimoku Falls with a SCA crew. That same year, Jay was invited to attend a National Power-Shift Conference in Washington, D.C. to discuss actions to reduce climate change. In 2011, Jay completed a conservation internship with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Rice Lake Refuge before returning to university to obtain a dual-baccalaureate degree in Geography and Regional Planning at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Prior to completing school, Jay was a former college business honor drop-out. In 2012 while attending university, Jay accepted a project with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service Diversity program via S.C.A. as a Museum Curator preserving cultural historical artifacts of Natives for environmental, cultural, and educational purposes. In 2014, Jay spent several months working in Fairbanks, Alaska alongside the Bureau of Land Management surveying recreational trails using GIS and GPS devices, while hiking some of the most trenches and steepest trails and mountains along the Steese Highway that runs 161 miles long. In 2016, Jay became a National Park Centennial Ambassador for the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi. Jay continues to learn and grow to protect and preserve human and natural resources through his acts of conservation and humanitarian volunteerism.

    Jay volunteered his time picking up trash along main-street in Hazelwood. When time permitted, he organized and led community events, contributed to the Hazelwood Homepage Newspaper, participated in Hazelwood Light Up Night for Christmas and led a bike awareness program for youth. Jay supported the clean-up of the steel mine, development of more green-spaces and the revitalization of a playground with former Mayor Bob O' Conner and local community leaders. Jay competed in the Hazelwood 5K Race placing 2nd in the men's group 13 to 18 years of age.
