Jay Emmanuel, an Indian-born Australian theatre artist, leads the way in the arts as a recognized actor, director, producer, and curator. With a foundation in Indian classical dance and training from L’Ecole Jacques Lecoq, his creative journey is marked by a diverse blend of artistic influences.Founder and current Artistic Director of Encounter, Jay is a rising star in theatre, renowned for his productions that grapple with both intimate and universal ethical quandaries, leaving a profound social impact. As a director and curator, he champions the creation of new works that highlight authentic storytelling. Noteworthy productions include "Beneath the Music” and the acclaimed "Children of the Sea" at Perth Festival 2021. As a performer, Jay participated in award-winning productions like "Mahabharata" with Why Not Theatre/Barbican and "Counting and Cracking" by Belvoir St./Co-Curious/Adelaide Festival.From 2016-19 Jay also served as the Artistic Director of St George’s Dance and Theatre and was the first Artist in Residence at the Ozasia Festival. In these roles, he led and designed innovative residency models, commission programs, mentorships, and curated theatre projects tailored to support culturally diverse artists. He served on the board of The Last Great Hunt, St. George Foundation, ASSITEJ, and The Blue Room Equity and Justice Committee.Jay embodies the vanguard of a fresh wave of Australian artists reshaping the very fabric of art and society. His ethos emphasizes deep community engagement, collaboration, and best practices. His leadership was acknowledged through his selection to represent Australia at the premiere arts leadership program in the United States in 2023.
