Senior Coordinator In Ngartuitya Family Group Conference
Ngartuitya Family Group Conference Perinatal Coordinator
This is a pilot program which is part of the Ngartuitya Family Group Conference team. This pilot has a focus on early interventions in the perinatal space for Aboriginal families living in the Western Suburbs of Adelaide. There is an aim to build capacities and strengthen families around Child Protection concerns to reduce trauma and removals of Aboriginal babies from their families and culture. We widen the circle to create protection and give families an opportunity for transparency when it comes to what the concerns are so that they can write their own safety plans for their children in a way that works for them as the experts in their own lives. It is an early intervention approach and is embedded in the Children and Young Persons Safety Act of 2017.
Ngartuitya Family Group Conference Coordinator
Ngartuitya is from the Kaurna language and means ‘for the Children’. Kaurna people are the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains region. Relationships Australia South Australia have been using Ngartuitya for some time for children’s services with a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.Starting in January 2020, Relationships Australia South Australia (RASA) is providing Family Group Conferencing as a service for families where concerns for the wellbeing and safety of a child or young person have been raised. Participating a Family Group Conference is voluntary. All referrals to Ngartuitya family Group Conference service will come from the Department of Child Protection. Ngartuitya Family Group Conference Service allocates a Coordinator to each referred family who has a focus on empowering families and community members to identify strategies to keep their own children and young people safe within family and kin. The Coordinator does this using strengths-based and inclusive approach, assisting families to work together to develop an agreement between all participating family members that describes how they can provide safe, permanent and stable care arrangements for their child or young person.
