Casey's is the 3rd largest convenience store chain in the US, the 5th largest pizza chain and a Fortune 500 company with around 42,000 employees across 20 states.Originally the team I was hired to supervise included both Networking and Security. Over the first few years, in addition to rebuilding data center and access networks, I worked to mature the security practice. I was instrumental in introducing IAM and SSO, next gen firewalls, user security training, access authentication and SOC/SEIM. I also pushed the idea that InfoSec should not be under the same management as Operations and as a result the current InfoSec group was created and staffed. At that point I was able to focus on the network and also inherited the telephone system.Over the subsequent years, we migrated the phone system to a fully integrated UC offering including Call Center capabilities. Other major network projects included deploying WiFi to the entire corporate campus and designing, building, staffing and running a second distribution center. We were early adopters of SD-WAN and migrated the entire 2000+ store network in just over a year.Almost every other system has also been created or modernized: network telemetry, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, NTP, Service Management, change control, PCI compliance, WAN architecture, Internet access architecture, route/switch architecture, etc.

Hired onan 18-month contract, I was part of the team implementing the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) for the ICN. Hundreds of sites served by traditional TDM DS3s had to be re-engineered for high-capacity ethernet access over fiber-optics. This required a major update of much of the network. After a few months, the team lead left and I became the de-facto lead. Procedures were improved as we went including adding diagrams to every installer package. These were not only appreciated by the field techs, but installation errors were reduced as a result. We employed a number of systems including DWDM, CWDM and Ciena switches. My 18 month contract was extended with the stated intention of bringing me on as a full-time Network Engineer for the organization.

Solve was a company that provided turn-key video delivery services to content owners and licensors. Working with Solve, media could be distributed to a significant number of video platforms including Roku set-top-boxes and Apple iThings through a single relationship. Responsible for technical aspects of pre-press operations as well as creation of target architecture for moving Meredith away from an “Ink on Paper” paradigm toward an “Any to Any” all-digital work-flow Accomplishments: • Returned Digital Asset Management platform to maintenance upgrade schedule • Performed adoption analysis of recently implemented work-flow management platform revealing significant opportunities for improvement • Mapped master process flow for all production and adapted it for “Any to any” content acquisition, creation and management • Began mapping processes to SOA enterprise architecture

Responsible for design and implementation of all IT infrastructure and OSS applications. This also included many aspects of telephony and IP network service design. Reports: • 3 *nix admin/engineers and 2 developers as well as outsourced resourcesAccomplishments: • Complete design, development and implementation of co-located systems for day-to-day operation of pre-paid MVNO (cellular) customer service, billing, business intelligence and product management • Creation of web-based service administration tools for customer service and provisioning • Creation and implementation of basic IT services including e-mail, IM, intranet, VPN, security policy, etc.

Responsible for design, implementation and management of ISP services at Iowa Telecom Reports: • 3 *nix system engineers, 1 Sr. web developer, Support Services Manager Accomplishments: •Built completely new ISP service infrastructure scalable to 250-thousand customers • Successfully transferred over 50-thousand live customers from wholesaler’s infrastructure to new infrastructure • Created, developed and deployed dozens of new products

Responsible for creation of business plan, product portfolio, costing and pricing of services, product creation (HW & SW) and implementation, sales engineering and service support. Reports: • 2 *nix systems engineers, 1 network engineer, sales manager Accomplishments: • Creation of a turn-key ISP services platform that was successfully implemented at about a half-dozen customer sites • R&D on dozens of unique solutions; many successfully implemented • Success of the business; cash-flow positive after seven months, sold to Iowa Telecom in 2003

Responsible for IP design and implementation including new products and NOC escalation Accomplishments: • Implemented an IP-based connectivity solution when an IXC was unable to deliver connectivity between network segments • Selected protocols to assure secure AAA for users of partner ISPs • Implementation of layer 2 (ATM/Frame Relay) & 3 (IP) facility-based service network, NOC and provisioning tools for over sixty tier 3 and 4 market cities across the US.

Responsible for design, implementation and management of all IP access and backbone networks at netINS Reports: • 3 network engineers, 5 NOC technicians, 2 network installers Accomplishments: • Grew access infrastructure from 2,000 dial-up subscribers to over 50,000 dial-up, DSL and CMTS subscribers • Grew IP access network from about 6 T1s to over 80 T1s and half a dozen T3s • Grew backbone connectivity from 3 T1s to 3 OC-3s and 3 T3s plus peering connections to many regional ISPs • Integral in designing and implementing dozens of new services • Personally handled small to large account relationships • Made netINS a successful value-added reseller of network equipment with automated inventory and accounting control

As the Promotions Director at KFMG, I had the good fortune to work with many Des Moines area organizations (Metro Arts, Central Iowa Blues Society, Hotel Fort Des Moines, People's, Hairy Mary's, etc.) as well as an incredible variety of artists and music industry organizations (Aimee Mann, del Amitri, Todd Snider, Blues Traveler, Collective Soul, Lyle Lovett, Paula Cole, indigo Girls, Bonnie Raitt, Adrian Belew, John Hiatt, etc.). I was also instrumental in bringing the biggest show of the day - Lollapalooza - to Des Moines.Of course, I also did regular air shifts and production work - I mean - why not?
