I previously wrote for The Wall Street Journal, where I covered Microsoft, Oracle and cloud-computing businesses such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. I also spent ten years as BusinessWeek’s Seattle bureau chief, where I managed the bureau and wrote primarily about Microsoft. I worked as a business reporter for The Seattle Times, where I've covered Microsoft and Amazon. And I was a senior writer and investigative reporter for CNET.I am the author of "Design Is How It Works: How the Smartest Companies Turn Products into Icons" (Penguin/Portfolio).I've won several national awards including a 2021 Sidney Award for outstanding investigative journalism from the Sidney Hillman Foundation for for exposing high rates of serious injury at Amazon warehouses. I also won the Best In Business Award for Explanatory Journalism from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers for my 2012 series on the life cycle of an iPhone. I was one of the first three recipients of the McGraw Fellowships for Business Journalism awarded by City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism in August 2014.
