Dr. Jay Gulledge conducted scientific research and performed environmental policy analysis in academia, non-governmental organizations, and government for nearly three decades before founding Science Guy Consulting in 2017. The company's name reflects Jay's time working in Washington DC for policy think tanks, where he was frequently introduced as "the science guy."Jay's diverse experiences in academic research, advising policymakers and business leaders, and managing large research enterprises in a Government laboratory, have given him special insight into the interface between science and policy, and between science and society more broadly. In 2011, he received the American Geophysical Union’s Charles S. Falkenberg Award, which honors a scientist "who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.”

As Director of the Environmental Sciences Division and a member of the Climate Change Science Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Dr. Jay Gulledge provides strategic scientific leadership for devising sustainable solutions to energy and environmental challenges. He is also a Senior Adviser for the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, where he previously served as Director of the Science and Impacts program. He received a PhD in biological sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, was a Life Sciences Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University, and held faculty posts at Tulane University and the University of Louisville. His scientific research examines biological mechanisms and social drivers of greenhouse gas exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere. After 16 years in academic research, Dr. Gulledge shifted focus to the science/policy interface, informing policy-makers, business leaders, the public, and the press about the science and impacts of environmental change and approaches for managing the associated risks. In this capacity, he has twice testified before Congress and meets frequently with policymakers and business leaders to educate them about environmental challenges and potential solutions.
