JPL's Robotics Section works on multidisciplinary problems ranging from early R&D to flight operations, with mission environments ranging from the deep ocean on Earth to the outer solar system.As a robotics mechanical engineer, my responsibilities range between system architect and detailed mechanical design.- Mobility: tracks (NIOSH mine exploring robot), dynamic legged quadruped (LLAMA), active-skin snake robot (EELS)- Manipulation: Europa Lander sample acquisition and handling. Mars Sample Return-related testbeds.- Extreme environment: cryogenic vacuum (Europa), explosion safety in coal mines, terrestrial glaciers.- Custom actuators: limb actuators for 70kg-class quadruped, 3D printed thermal management features.- Institutional contributions: design review roles, performed technical interviews of new hire candidates, proposal planning, writing, and graphics (e.g. concept renders).

- Co-designed Andy 3, the mission’s protoflight robotic rover.- ‘The motor guy’; responsible for motor & gearbox performance analysis and selection.- Currently leading a new CubeRover initiative.

- Independently developed and manufactured prototypes of three automated food-dispensing stations (each for a different ‘class’ of sandwich ingredients).- Iteratively improved prototypes through testing and forensic engineering.- Collaborated with other engineers to integrate and debug several additional stations.

- Designed two robotic cells to precisely slit plastic rings of varying sizes (two different style slits).- Designed and built a semi-automated robotic cell for slitting plastic backup rings. This proof-of-concept is now being used for small production runs.- Performed a statistical analysis of the shipping department's part-counting procedures.- Tested a large o-ring buffing prototype, and made modifications to improve performance and safety.

- Designed and documented a hand-operated tool for tuning flight waveguides.- Synthesized information from multiple sources to compile a catalog of common parts, vendors, and costs.

- Teach engineering design and fabrication techniques to high-school students on FRC team 1747.- Manage all engineering and fabrication (including other mentors) to ensure a high-performance robot.- Provide engineering leadership for up to 24 hours/week during competition season (January/February).

- Designed a multi-step robotic cell to place colored marks on a large variety small rubber seals.- Analyzed part data to calculate machine capability requirements and achieve speeds of 1000 parts/hour.- Collaborated with representatives from other companies to select and size subsystems.

- Set up and developed standard procedures for a 4-axis CNC Lathe (Hyundai-Kia SKT21-LMS), including writing macros (some activated by Mastercam) to increase automation and extend the functionality of the machine.- Collected and analyzed data to evaluate and improve the efficiency of the deflashing / rocking department.

- Created half the interface between standard robot software (Player) and a motor controller chip on the Microvision robot.- Added interface to a rigid-body robot simulation, so client programs may control and receive data from the simulation.- Created a system which allows a single client program to control either a simulated robot, or a real robot.
