In my current role as a Graduate Research Assistant, I support Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles, the Department Head, in various key initiatives within the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development. My responsibilities include:Research and Analysis: Conducting in-depth research on higher education equity practices and their impact on student outcomes. This research contributes to the development of a special volume for the New Directions for Higher Education journal.Course Co-Teaching: Collaborating with Dr. Gayles to co-teach Higher Education research and practice courses, which involves preparing course materials, facilitating discussions, and mentoring students.Faculty Communication: Assisting in the creation and development of a department-wide faculty newsletter, aimed at enhancing internal communication and fostering a collaborative environment.Event Planning: Co-leading the planning and execution of a reception for the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), which involves coordinating logistics, managing event details, and ensuring a successful event.

As the Assistant Program Coordinator, Jayla is a powerhouse, working under the esteemed leadership of Dr. Krispin Barr, Dr. Alyssa Rockenbach, and Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles. She coordinates all the major events and initiatives for the NC State Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice PAS and Higher Education MED Program, catering to a vast community of 90 graduate students, 300+ alumni, and faculty members. From new student orientations and open houses to diversity recruitment programs and campus tours, Jayla's fingerprints are all over the action. But her role doesn't stop there. Jayla also oversees the student leadership teams and collaborates with master's students to orchestrate the annual recruitment and admissions process. Her responsibilities extend to hosting the program's annual reception at the Association for the Study of Higher Education Conference, managing faculty and administrative support, and curating all written and verbal communication on behalf of the Higher Education Program. Jayla also co-writes grants for program funding and recruitment alongside Dr. Kripin Barr. Her unwavering dedication and boundless energy make her an indispensable asset to the entire NC State Higher Education community.

Jayla co-teaches in the Higher Education Administration M.Ed program and Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice Ph.D. Concentration at North Carolina State University. She has collaborated with various instructors on several courses, including EAC 542: College Environments, where she served as a co-instructor with Dr. Melvin Jai Jackson during the Spring 2023 semester. In Fall 2023, she co-instructed EAC 595: Admissions and Marketing in Higher Education Student Affairs alongside Dr. Krispin Barr. In Spring 2024, Jayla co-taught two additional courses: EAC 595: Diversity in Higher Education with Dr. Keon McGuire and EAC 595: Internship in Higher Education, again with Dr. Krispin Barr. Additionally, in Spring 2025, she will co-teach Cultivating Joy in Higher Education alongside Drs. Joy Gaston Gayles and Krispin Barr.

Instructor of Record for Implicit Bias and Community Engagement, a required graduate-level course for students enrolled in the Community Engaged Medicine Master of Science degree program. This 1 credit hour course is administered using an intergroup dialogue model, helping future healthcare practitioners to discover and explore hidden biases related to health disparities. The training helps students prepare to engage in their local communities, better understanding their backgrounds and biases and how they impact how care is received and perceived.

Jayla serves as a doctoral mentor to 6 RISE fellows. The Research Institute for Scholars of Equity (RISE) is designed to provide upper-level undergraduate students with experiences in conducting mixed-methods education research while preparing participants for doctoral study. RISE is a partnership between North Carolina Central University and the University of Southern California (USC). RISE includes faculty mentors and students from these universities, in addition to students and faculty mentors from collaborating institutions. As a doctoral mentor, Jayla helps to socialize the students to the profession of educational and social science research. A priority for the work as a doctoral mentor is to help the RIGs to start the bonding process by leading discussions about issues regarding educational equity, educational research, the realities of being a doctoral student, and other topics that will socialize them to the world of educational research as a possible future for them.

As a Communications master's student at Georgia State University, Jayla served as a writing consultant for undergraduate students who needed rough draft reviews, grammar assistance, resume and interview preparation, and help with AP style writing. She managed the department's Instagram page (@gsujournalismlab) and helped to create content for the Journalism Writing Lab's blog.

Jayla helped to reinstate and lead Georgia State University's Public Relations Student Society of America chapter. In this role, she served on social media strategy team and assisted with audience engagement and completed Instagram stories. Jayla connected and communicated with alumni network, faculty and staff and community representatives while also assisting and helping to plan press conferences and media events. Jayla produced a cover story in the Mercer University magazine, The Mercian, in Spring 2019.

Jayla was a 4-year member of the student admissions and special events team at her alma mater, Mercer University. She conducted weekly tours for incoming and prospective Mercer students and hosted special events such as scholarship competitions and preview days on campus. Jayla regularly served as a panelist for prospective students at bi-weekly university previews and was ranked as the top-scoring tour guide on the student admissions and special events team in 2018. Jayla also hosted overnight tours for high school students and provided them with resources for entering college and finding themselves and their purpose in a new space.
