My experience teaching the last year has changed my life...Through my final year at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, I taught United States history at McGavock High School, the largest public high school in Tennessee. After 6 months, I then taught general social studies and more specifically Ancient History at West End Middle School also in Tennessee. The experiences I had relating to these students and problem-solving in different creative ways that we as teachers could help students grow through the content of history were inspiring. Now recently graduated from Peabody College at Vanderbilt, I want the first opportunity I get to work to be focused on helping education thrive for K-12 students. I would be excited to teach history or social studies, counsel or advise high schoolers, create curricula and develop lessons for educators, or work with any organization that is focusing on students and the betterment of schooling around the country.I think the time I spent teaching my final year gave me skills that only the experience of teaching in public education can provide. I learned how to connect with different backgrounds as every student I taught was unique and needed specific help to thrive. I also became great at communicating ideas, whether that be through lecturing or creating assignments that all students no matter their first language could utilize for their success. All of this came from the constructive advice I got from experienced teachers around me that helped me understand the value of working together as a team to find success.
