Gofer, Occasional Boss And Numerous Titles BetweenMacfee Oil Company May 1974 - Dec 1983Rural, Kansas, United StatesThis is here for fun and the adventurous human who actually reads LinkedIn profiles. Family owned full-service gas station, bulk fuel and Firestone dealer. Worked my way through middle school, high school and college. Educated on life by WWII, Korea and Vietnam vets, children and grandchildren of immigrants, pioneers making a living off the land, business and community leaders. Absorbed much prairie wisdom and many colorful words and phrases.Tasks included everything except brain surgery. If it ran, we kept it moving. If it needed maintenance, we checked it, changed it, lubed it and cleaned it. If it went on a wheel and held air, we fixed it when it leaked and replaced it when it wore out.Selected tasks and lessons:Pumped gas, washed windshields and checked fluids. Full service. Lessons learned – provide service with a smile even when Ona Mae points out the bug juice missed on the windshield (despite 100+ degree glass temp). Customers pay the bills so be nice, even to those you don’t care for. Leaded gas might explain certain quirks.Tire replacement and repair; bikes to semi-trucks, lawn mowers to tractors. Some with a machine. Many by hand. Lessons learned: a) if at first you don’t succeed, get a bigger hammer; b) pay attention to detail – if not assembled properly, some wheels come apart under pressure and might kill you and c) bank thermometer says 105, humidity 98%, 120+ on the unshaded concrete swinging a hammer convinces one to pursue an office job with air conditioning.Hauling bulk fuel. Principal lesson learned is to think ahead – a necessity when carrying 590 gallons of flammable liquid in a truck with minimally functional brakes and a disconnected e-brake lever. Half mile out, downshift, downshift, downshift then brake.Free advice for anyone who got this far: Keep your politics out of your business. * Bonus tip - your people are your most valuable asset. Don't outsource the acquisition of same.
