Since 1988, Jay has served farmers and agribusinesses of central and northern New York. Initially he worked for Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Oswego and Jefferson Counties. He assisted landowners with many natural resource conservation projects. Mr. Matteson provided thousands of conservation education programs for schools and community groups for children and adults. During his time with Conservation Districts, Jay was involved with starting the NYS Envirothon and served on the National Envirothon Board of Directors. On 12/11/2000, Jay was hired to serve as the Jefferson County Agricultural Coordinator. He continues in that position today.As Agricultural Coordinator, His role is to provide agricultural economic development assistance to Jefferson County. He provides promotion and marketing assistance to farms and agribusinesses and serves as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the industry in Jefferson County. Jay has served on many state, regional and national boards serving agriculture over his 31 years of work.Jay works with local news media to gain positive coverage of ag stories. He is a monthly columnist with NNY Business Magazine and has been published in local, regional and national publications. He is a recipient of the NYS Agricultural Society's Cap Creal Agricultural Journalism Award. He is host of The Home Grown Show, a weekly hour long talk show about agriculture on AM 790 WTNY, recognized by former NYS Governor David Patterson for its success in bringing agricultural issues to the public. He enjoys volunteering with Boy Scouts of America in a variety of positions. He volunteers with community organizations lending his voice as an auctioneer for fundraisers, story-teller, master of ceremony for events, or announcing high school sports games or community events.
