TravelMeta Feb 2023 - Aug 2023Menlo Park, Ca, UsMy wife and I had been dreaming of taking a sabbatical for over a decade.With our 5 year old Tilly, and then 9 month old Remy, last year we were lucky enough to make it happen and spent 6.5 incredible months in Provence, France, in a little town called Saint Remy. We didn't travel around, we stayed in the one house for the whole time, our plan was to live like locals. Which we accomplished, all but the fluent French speaking part.The weekly markets, the trips to the boulangerie, the walks around the old town and the day trips exploring the surrounding region without a schedule became our routine. It was magical.One of the most surprising experiences, and a little concerning to begin with, was how long it took me to properly decompress and disconnect - nearly 3 months!The most valuable skill I learnt from the trip was to be able to fully be present with the children and Ingrid. I remember one day lounging around the pool, Tilly swimming, I was reading a book, one of many, and Tilly said "Dad what day is it?", I couldn't recall. "What time is it Dad?", I honestly didn't know."Are you hungry?" I said."Yup!""Well I guess it's lunchtime then!"Since getting back to normal life in Sydney, I have to confess I've lost some of that presentness that I'd cultivated during our time away.But I’ve learnt a valuable life skill - I can get there again and I know how to get there now.I say all this painfully aware how priveleged we are to have had this experience.If it's your dream to go on sabbatical, I truly hope you're able to have one too some day.Practicing being a little more present doesn't need to be the sole domain of the sabbatical though.You can practice that right here, right now.Put down your phone and ask your child what day it is. -
