I have always been passionate about health and wellbeing. In my early career, I worked in the sports and leisure industry in administration and management positions. I took time out between 1992 and 1994 to travel around Asia, Australia and New Zealand. This trip opened my eyes to different traditions, beliefs and systems of health and wellbeing. I was keen to learn more, knowing then that I wanted to be a hands-on practitioner. What followed were years of training, personal and practitioner development, and further travel. In 2000, I graduated from the University of Westminster, London with a BSc in Health Sciences and Complementary Therapies.Between 2010 and 2013 I volunteered with the charity, Healing Hands Network, offering therapies to civilian survivors of war in Sarajevo, Bosnia, going out each year for a 2-week period. In 2013, I worked as an Aromatherapist for Sue Ryder in their palliative care unit within West Berkshire Community Hospital and in the same year completed a Diploma in Adapting Complementary Therapies in Cancer and Supportive Care from The Christie NHS Trust, in Manchester. In late 2013, I was successful in my first full time position as a Cancer and Palliative Care Complementary Therapist, with Dimbleby Cancer Care based in Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, London. Here I was offering therapies to oncology and haematology patients.2014 saw a move to UCLH Macmillan Cancer Centre, London as the Senior Complementary Therapist/Service Manager (covering sabbatical leave), where I managed a team of therapists, and continued to offer therapies for patients in the oncology, haematology and red blood cell service.Between 2016 and 2017, I had the pleasure to work as a massage therapist, yin yoga and meditation teacher at Suraylila Retreat Centre in SW Spain and volunteered in their permaculture project. From 2020 to 2022 I was fortunate to be the first, full time, Integrated Therapist at The Christie NHS Trust in Manchester, supporting patients through their cancer treatments. I currently work there on a part time basis and am a tutor within their Integrated Therapies Training Unit.

Integrated TherapistThe Quiet Way 1997 - PresentI have been fortunate to explore a wide range of bodywork practices and plant based therapies with some brilliant teachers over the last 30 years. The list of massage techniques and other therapies I am insured to practice is a long one, some are hands on (massage, reflex, craniosacral, IHM) and some hands off (energy healing, aromatherapy, flower remedies). In reality, I find that a mix and match of approaches, tailed to suit you and what you are dealing with at this time, works well. With the challenges of the last 2 covid years and our own personal challenges, I am reminded of a ‘keep it simple’ approach. Our nervous systems are exhausted and life looks very different now. I am applying this idea to my work, simplifying what I offer. A reassuring touch to co-regulate the nervous system, a delicious blend of essential oils to encourage a deeper breath, or deep massage pressure to ease the back and scalp of all it’s tension, is enough.Through all the years I have maintained a personal practice of breathwork, meditation, yoga, running and contemplative study. I have experienced many of the painful things in life that we all likely to experience at one time or another, including: anxiety and depression, loss and pain. Without a doubt these personal experiences inform my professional work and whilst I don’t have all the answers, maybe I have something to offer, if only the reminder of the value of slowing down and taking some quiet time

Yoga Nidra MeditationThe Quiet Way Jan 2016 - PresentYOGA NIDRA MEDITATIONAlso known as ‘yogic sleep’, yoga nidra is derived from the traditional Yoga tradition. One of the main tenets of Yoga philosophy is that each and every one of us has and indestructible centre that is already peaceful, joyful and loving.During Yoga nidra meditation you lie comfortably on a yoga mat, in the traditional Savasana yoga pose, with a blanket to keep warm. All you then do is follow my voice as I take you through specialised relaxation exercises, breathing techniques, meditation and guided imagery.A very special feature of yoga nidra is the ‘Sankalpa’ or resolve. A short, positive statement about an aim in life you wish to achieve. Setting a sankalpa (resolve) during this time of meditation makes it possible to clear out old patterns of thinking and reacting and brings about a positive and permanent change. With regular practice, you may notice your physical and emotional response to stress changes, perhaps you’ll feel calmer or enjoy living with a clear head. Your energy may increase and your immune system strengthen. You may experience symptom relief related to a cancer diagnosis, migraine, headache or high blood pressure. Regular practice of yoga nidra meditation can help manage chronic pain. One of the techniques known as ‘the rotation of body awareness’ stimulates different parts of the brain that control each and every body nerve. When you are aware of each part of your body, you are actually massaging the corresponding part in the brain as well. You establish the connection between the body and the mind.

Mindful Yin YogaThe Quiet Way Apr 2016 - PresentMINDFUL YIN YOGAMindful yin yoga combines the influences of mindfulness, Indian yogic practices, Chinese daoist principles with western science to improve our health on many levels. With its emphasis on long held, passive stretches, mindful yin yoga increases flexibility in the back, hips and pelvis, mobilises and strengthens the joints and allows both body and mind to drop into deeply nourishing relaxation.Mindfulness is a way of paying attention, on purpose and without judgment, to what goes on in the present moment in your body, mind and your outside environment. It involves intentionally stepping out of ‘automatic pilot’ to be present, aware and responsive. We learn how to observe the breath and use this as a way to focus on the present moment, allowing thoughts and feelings to arise, but being able to sit with them and watch them, without getting “involved”, before letting them fade away.In Daoist principles, ‘yin’ is about yielding, being, letting go. Much of our daily life is spent being in a ‘yang’ state, busy, striving, doing, achieving. We need a balance of both for a healthy life and this practice gives us the permission and space to slow down and experience our yin nature. With the long held forward bends, the relaxation response is initiated leaving you feeling deeply relaxed. The yin tissues of deep connective tissue, ligaments, tendons and bone respond well to the longer held asanas, enabling:* stretch of fascia, muscles and ligaments of the back, pelvis and hips* improving range of movement in tight joints* rehydrate the synovial fluids* break down old scar tissue* release toxins and waste products from tissueWithin a class, we start with a short meditation, pranayama (breathing exercise) or guided visualisation, moving into seated mindful joint freeing exercies, then practice a number of longer held asanas (mostly floor based), ending in a final relaxation in savasana. Bolsters, blocks and other supportive accessories are used.
