I was employed as a Quality Control Shift Chemist (made redundant due to Covid) working 12.5 hour rotating shifts (DuPont shift pattern) to provide continuous cover in the 24/7 operation in a very busy QC laboratory supporting plant production of a top tier COMAH site. My role involves:• Responsible for all aspects of Quality Control, including the testing of incoming raw materials as well as the intermediary and finished products.• Carrying out the testing and approval of intermediary and finished products safely, in accordance with procedures to ensure all products leaving site conform to required specifications, in a timely manner so as to minimize any delays to blending and logistics.• Testing samples to internationally recognized test methods and in-house methods using a wide variety of equipment and techniques including IR, Karl Fischer, SG, RI, viscometry, GPC, Lovibond turbidity/colorimetry, density, COD (HACH) effluent analysis, Titrando/Titrino and basic wet chemistry.• Advise production of any necessary adjustments required for OOS results.• Perform pilot work as part of NCM investigations.• Maintaining lab equipment and facilities to required standard including troubleshooting and calibration.• Managing and prioritizing workload as well as giving approval for product.• Working shifts in a small team including working alone and without direct supervision.• Train new starters and students.• Use SAP, StarLIMS and Outlook as well as Microsoft Office (Word/Excel).

Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

Reporting to the lab manager, I was part of a team of 6 in an analytical lab supporting plant production and working under pressure to meet tight deadlines. My role involved:• Carrying out the testing and approval of lubricant components, electrical oils and finished products safely, in accordance with procedures to ensure all products leaving site conform to required specifications, in a timely manner so as to minimize any delays to blending and logistics.• Testing samples to internationally recognized test methods and in-house methods using a wide variety of equipment including ICP, IR and Herzog viscometers.• Maintaining lab equipment and facilities to required standard including troubleshooting and calibration.• Familiar with SAP and SCADA.• Managing and prioritizing workload as well as giving approval for product.• Carrying out other test/development work under the direction of the Lab Manager.• Optimisation of laboratory by Continuous Improvement in order to work more efficiently using Lean principles and 5S ideas.• Working shifts including working alone and without direct supervision.• Proactively working with site HSSE team to address laboratory and site issues.

Speke, Liverpool

• All aspects of chemical testing, which included particle size, bulk volume and moisture analysis, as well as potency assay using HPLC, stability testing and identity by TLC.• Responsible for 2nd person verification of all results as well as LIMS entry.• Organizing the distribution of the workload in the laboratory to ensure all lots were tested and released in a timely manner. Also organizing and updating the lab testing schedule and lab metrics. • Successfully completed an Instructional Skills course that enabled me to train new starters in the required methods/procedures.• Perform housekeeping, self inspection and safety audits.

Widnes, Cheshire

• All aspects of analysis for development personal care products, which included analysis of rheology modifiers using a viscometer, metal determination via Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, porosimetry, XRF and XRD analysis.• Developed the method and performed the analysis for determining the particle charge density of development products using a Mütek particle charge detector.• Performed trials in the lab which were, depending upon results, transferred to the plant for full scale production.• All aspects of routine QC analysis for intermediate and finished products.

Runcorn, Cheshire

• Going out onto the plant and collecting samples from various points of the process in the production of vinyl chloride to analyse twice per shift. • A variety of analytical techniques were employed including Gas Chromatography, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry as well as basic wet chemistry including iron determination using colorimetry, moisture analysis and acidity/alkalinity titration’s.• Responsible for collecting and analyzing effluent samples for environmental purposes.• Reporting to the Process Shift team if any fluctuations were noted in the process so any adjustments to the process could be made accordingly.• Worked 12 hour rotating shifts to provide continuous cover in the 24/7 operation.

• Responsible for all aspects of Quality Control, including the testing of all incoming raw materials as well as the intermediary and finished product, using a variety of analytical techniques including Normal and Reverse Phase HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), Gas Chromatography and Infra-Red Spectroscopy, as well as all aspects of wet chemistry. • My day-to-day duties regularly included all QC inspections of lines running in the factory as well as passing all pallets waiting to be sent out and inputting all results into LIMS.
