I got my first lessons in geology while going to work with my Dad in the summertime. He was a domestic water well driller working in a small area of eastern Kentucky, and over time I realized that he knew that area's geology better than anyone else I knew. While working with my Dad I also learned how to do some plumbing and electrical work (installing pumps in the wells) and maintenance on equipment. Beyond that, though, I learned how to do word-of-mouth marketing and dealing with customers, something I have used throughout my later career.I began my professional career as a on-site geologist for an environmental company, with most of my projects involving underground storage tank removals and other site characterizations. This work continued across three different companies over a 10-year time, and honestly, by the end of that time period I was pretty well burned out on that kind of work (like many others in that field).I landed into the geophysical logger career path rather unexpectedly, but I came to love it and embrace it as my chosen career for the remainder of my working life. I realized that this work took me back to the days of working with my Dad - doing a job that I truly love and enjoy. I got to interact not only with professional geologists but also with the professional drillers... a rare breed of human these days. With the combined issues of a global pandemic and a downturn in coal exploration, I found myself out of a job. I began Ramsey Geophysical Services with the hopes of reliving the glory days of elogging, but soon settled into a role of probe repairs and other supporting tasks. In an odd turn of events, I found a job through a contact that knew my son. I began working in the new-to-me field of geotechnical engineering. The small firm I work for has the need for it’s employees to not only wear multiple “hats” at the same time, but to change those “hats” throughout the work day !!! I’ve used skills that I thought I had forgotten, plus learning new skills daily. Even more important than that, I have fell into a great work environment with people that I honestly enjoy working with.
