About Jayro Bustamante

Filmmaker, telling the stories of my people, who have long been muted. Harnessing the transformative force of cinema to drive social change. Founder of La Casa de Producción and Fundación Ixcanul. CALI Foundation Fellow and Skoll Foundation Fellow. I am a Guatemalan film screenwriter, producer and director. In 2015, I produced and directed my first film IXCANUL, which earned a Silver Bear at the Berlinale and more than 60 awards at international festivals. My second film TEMBLORES premiered at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival and received several international awards. My third film, LA LLORONA, premiered at Venice in 2019, winning the Giornate degli Autori Best Director award. It was the first Central American film to be on the Oscars shortlist and was nominated as Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and Best IberoAmerican Film at the Goya Awards. On the television side, I recently directed the pilot episode of FX’s THE BORDER. I am the founder of La Casa De Producción and the Fundación Ixcanul, dedicated to bringing cultural and educational content to Guatemala through cinema. My fourth and fifth films, "Rita" and "Cordillera de Fuego," are pending release.
