Profile bio

About Jay Schoen

I am a recent PhD recipient from Columbia University's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Program, in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology (E3B). My research applies the latest computational tools like Machine/Deep Learning to field data from camera traps, GPS collars, and more to answer spatial ecological questions and address conservation goals around landscape connectivity. I do so by using custom-derived geospatial analyses to model in situ data with dynamic spatial data (i.e., satellite imagery and derived products). My current projects focus on large carnivore movement ecology in human-altered areas, specifically tigers in central India and jaguars in the southern extent of their range (Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina). Partners and I have also been running camera trap surveys to collect data on mammal activity and habitat use in mixed-use areas. One current project is focused on an urban park in Washington Heights, New York City. Another is in the largest remnant patch of Atlantic Forest in Paraguay, the Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve.
