Profile bio

About Jay Wallis

I cut my retail teeth in stores, moved on to the planning and allocation world, and have loved every moment of the journey. Traveling down various P&A paths (allocation and replenishment, testing, store planning and analysis, merchandise planning, and leadership) I’ve come to appreciate the need for quality information. I say “information” and not “data” because retail is more than just 1’s and 0’s — we need to have context in how we interpret foundational data to make it meaningful as “information” and valuable as “knowledge”.To gain context, I listen to others — peers, counterparts from other disciplines or areas, store associates, customers, and industry leaders. With that context, I use data to tell a story and to solve problems. I create solutions that are fact-based and simple, focusing on how end users will connect with the information and underlying data. I believe that if a user can’t explain how we got to a solution, or discern what the information is really telling them, then we’ve likely made it too complicated.Solutions and strategies that I’ve developed through my career include:• multi-dimension store clustering• exception store identification with category performance drill-downs• cluster-based assortment planning • store cluster purchasing and allocation for apparel sizes• store layout productivity• seasonal profile development• ladder planning and open-to-buy management• promotional forecasting and purchasing• price and product test execution and analysisI’ve led teams ranging from 4 to 15 people. In leading, I seek to develop and leverage individuals’ unique strengths and talents, because I believe the interweaving of different strengths creates an overall stronger team. I encourage the folks on my team to see themselves as contributors not just to our team, but also to the area of business that they help to manage.I’ve had an opportunity to shepherd and participate in system implementation projects for store replenishment, host/ERP, business intelligence, and demand planning. I learned early on in these projects that my primary objective is not to be the loudest or the smartest voice in the room. Rather, it is to engage the best talent to contribute the collective knowledge, experience, expertise, and out-of-the-box thinking that’s required to ensure a successful implementation and transition. When not learning new Excel tips and tricks (a never-ending project), I love listening to and studying nearly all types of music, running the gamut from renaissance to rockabilly.
