About Jazlyn Borges
I am a current graduate student at the University of Toronto pursuing my PhD in Physiology. My research focuses on neuroinflammation and cell death, which I am conducting under the co-supervision of Dr. Michael Salter and Dr. Benjamin Steinberg at The Hospital for Sick Children. I completed my BSc (Hons with Distinction) in Biomedical Science with a Minor in Psychology at Ryerson University. I worked as a research assistant at MaRS Discovery District (Ryerson University Facilities) for three years under the supervision of Dr. Costin Antonescu. I also worked on a separate project for two years, which was co-supervised by Dr. Warren Wakarchuk. I have been exposed to a variety of disciplines from an early age, namely the performing arts (ballet, piano, voice) and biomedical sciences. I have also led teams and won various awards in debate, public speaking, social justice and outreach, which I continue today in my research, mentoring/tutoring, and LGBTQ+ activism.I have been awarded for my research presentations on multiple occasions, including best presentation, people’s choice, and for my use of sex and gender-based analyses. I love learning and enjoy courses involving cell biology and physiology, subjects of which I tutor as a group and private instructor.
Listed skills include Leadership, Critical Thinking, Public Speaking, Singing, and 30 others.

Phd Candidate/Student Researcher
In fulfillment of the PhD program, Department of Physiology, University of Toronto. Collaborative program in neuroscience (CPIN) student.Investigating cell death pathways and their roles in neuropathic pain. Methods include primary and cell line culture, mammalian cell transfection, immunoblotting, qPCR, co-immunoprecipitation, super resolution (stimulated emission depletion, STED) microscopy, TIRF microscopy, single particle tracking, immunohistochemistry, and use of animal models (handling, surgery, and behavioural tests).
Tutor
I offer tutoring for a variety of courses in biology and music. Ryerson-specific courses I tutor include first year biology (BLG143, BLG144), cell biology (BLG311, BLG411) , physiology (BLG600), anatomy (BLG700), biological psychology (PSY324), music (primarily music theory), and more.
Summer Research Student, Supervised By Dr. Costin N. Antonescu
Thesis Student, Supervised By Dr. Costin N. Antonescu
Worked with a research team that focuses on fundamental cellular processes that, when disrupted, contribute to cancer progression. This includes how dynamic nanoscale molecular assemblies (clathrin structures, receptor complexes, lipid remodelling structures) are regulated by chemical, mechanical and metabolic cues, and how they can be therapeutically controlled for cancer treatment and targeted drug delivery. My project focused on signalling mechanisms that regulate Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (STATs) in epithelial and triple negative breast cancer cell lines.Laboratory techniques include cell culture, whole-cell lysate preparation, cell treatment with various inhibitors, immunoblotting, siRNA gene silencing, immunofluorescence staining, and spinning disc confocal microscopy. Located at MaRS Discovery District (Ryerson University Research Facilities).

Undergraduate Research Assistant (Volunteer), Supervised By Dr. Costin Antonescu
Worked with a research team focused on the reciprocal regulation of membrane traffic and cellular signalling in relation to the cell surface proteome - notably, by clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Investigated effects of specific post translational modifications on protein function and internalization that impact biological homeostasis and disease pathologies, with implications in cardioprotection and treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease. This research will contribute to furthering current understanding of various pathologies, as well as possible routes for future treatment.Laboratory skills include cell culture (epithelial cells), pharmacological treatments, and immunoblotting.MaRS Discovery District (Ryerson University Research Facilities).
