About Dr Josh J. Bailey

I am a Vice-Chancellor Illuminate Fellow at Queen's University Belfast with a focus on the implementation of ionic liquids in fuel cells. My previous work as a research fellow looked at novel chemistries and cell designs for redox flow batteries, culminating in the design of prototype flow battery systems. My previous role at QUB looked at combining the up-conversion of renewable feedstocks into functional nanomaterials with the application of phase-change materials and additive manufacturing for passive battery thermal management systems. My previous role as a PDRA on the Faraday Institution's 'Nextrode' project focused on the manufacture and characterisation of next-generation lithium-ion batteries. I also have experience in investigating the microstructure and function of membrane technologies (dual-phase membranes, solar thermal refractories, fuel cell electrolytes) and previous to this, my PhD studies were conducted across UCL and Imperial College, as part of the CDT in the Advanced Characterisation of Materials, looking at degradation in solid oxide fuel cells. Throughout my early academic career, my work has leveraged a wide range of characterisation techniques to probe what is happening at the micro- and nano-scale in electrochemical devices. Alongside this research, I am passionate about engaging with the public about advances in green energy and actively manage a small start-up that promotes renewable technology, runs interactive outreach workshops, and delivers informative talks whilst acting as a catalyst for sustainable change.
