About Joseph Ballouz, Phd

Currently working on a stealth AI startup. My professional work with the Interfiled Group (2022 - 2024) involved conducting hydrologic and hydraulic analysis on future land developments.During my time at Stanford University (2015-2020) I gained valuable research experience and developed a track record in fundamental research on turbulence (in the fluid mechanics field) which is a highly complex phenomenon. This was a formative experience in making sense of a highly chaotic system and publishing my findings in peer-reviewed journals .In addition, I completed a PhD minor in computational and mathematical engineering (ICME), which focused on pde solving, numerical methods, numerical matrix computations, optimization, among others, as well as another PhD minor in Computer Science with an emphasis on machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision In addition, I am an experienced programmer (C++, Python, MATLAB, C, etc. ). Finally, I am an excellent communicator and public speaker (having delivered multiple research talks at Stanford University and in international conferences), and I embrace team work and collaboration: one testament to this is my recommendation letter from my doctoral advisor at Stanford University Professor Nicholas Ouellette, director of the Environmental Complexity laboratory at Stanford, who I have worked with for five years. This letter can be found in my featured works.

My research initially was experimental in nature and explored the turbulence properties in dilute polymer solutions via 3D particle tracking in a cylindrical tank with counter rotating disks at the top and bottom (we published one paper on this topic). The main topic for my PhD was theoretical in nature and based on the data analysis side where we explored the fundamental properties of the turbulent cascade by adopting a unique mechanical/geometrical perspective. We tested these theories using data analysis tools (MATLAB) from data obtained from large turbulence simulations. I have three publications on this topic as a first author. You may also see my full thesis: 'On the Efficiency of the Turbulent Cascade' in my featured works. In addition, I completed two PhD minors from Stanford University. The first is a minor in Computer Science with an emphasis on machine learning, deep learning, convolutional neural networks for visual recognition, amongst others. I completed several interesting projects on these topics as listed below.Secondly, I completed a PhD minor in Computational and Mathematical engineering (ICME) from Stanford University. This focused on numerical solving of partial differential equations, optimization, numerical matrix operations, the theory of probability and statistics, amongst others. These PhD minors allowed me to broaden my horizons at Stanford, and thanks to my PhD advisor Nicholas Ouellette, I was able to take all these interesting and exciting courses, which complemented the quality of my PhD research.
