About Joao Marcos Barguil
What inspires me daily is being at the intersection of scientific knowledge and "real life." Knowledge is only useful when applied for building a better world.My journey in technology began early. At 14, as "punishment" for being disrespectful, I went to work at my father's company. There, I learned computer programming using a book by Niklaus Wirth, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering at the University of São Paulo.During a one-year exchange program in Finland, I immersed myself in two emerging fields at the time: mobile and cloud computing. In collaboration with UNICEF, I went to Africa to work on a sanitation project in rural schools in Uganda. This experience reinforced my belief that innovation can truly change lives.After graduating, I followed a path in startups focused on social and environmental impact, particularly in education and communities, always driven by the desire to create something meaningful. At Guiaderodas, I led the development of a collaborative accessibility platform. Helping people with disabilities find more inclusive places was a wonderful achievement, and we won several national and international awards. We collected hundreds of thousands of accessibility reviews in more than 100 countries. I also secured and managed a 1.2 million reais investment through the PAPPE/PIPE innovation incentive program, supported by governmental agencies FINEP and FAPESP.Later, I took on the role of Head of Innovation and AI at Opus Software, where my mission is to use Artificial Intelligence to boost productivity and redefine how companies integrate technology. The impact on businesses — and on the lives that depend on this innovation — is my driver.In parallel, I built an academic career. My master's thesis in cryptography was awarded as the best in Brazil by the Brazilian Computing Society. During my PhD, I researched data quality in crowdsourcing, a crucial topic for current advancements in Artificial Intelligence.Today, alongside my work at Opus, I am a professor at Poli-USP and FGV, helping to train the next generation of professionals who will continue this transformation.
