Inherited an existing Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) built using the Microsoft BI stack (SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS). The EDW was suffering significant performance problems in the ETL and Reporting areas. Additionally, the EDW was prone to uptime and reliability issues. Adoption and usage were poor and user confidence was low.• Addressed several performance issues by making targeted schema changes in the database. ETL and Report performance were both significantly improved. • Redesigned the ETL solution in multiple phases, first re-factoring the base business logic code for performance and accuracy, and second, redesigning the package layouts and structure, improving maintainability and troubleshooting.• Created a ETL strategy and design template to govern all new ETL development, insuring consistent package naming, logging, error handling, etc..• Developed a style template and design template for all new reports. Retro-fitted most of the existing reports to this set of templates.• Upgraded the entire EDW environment to SQL Server 2008 from SQL Server 2005.• Designed and implemented a Report Model for the power users and business analysts.• Grew the EDW team from one to four persons, functioning as both technical architect and manager. • Rolled the EDW Reporting Portal out to a user base of over one hundred users, with daily usage averaging several report requests per day per user.• Moved the ETL nightly run to a eight-times-per-day process cycle, allowing for morning, mid-day, afternoon and early evening analysis of current day information.• Replaced SQL Server 2000 SQL Server 2005 Data Cubes with a single partitioned cube for use across the company.Overall gains in the EDW environment included a reduction of ETL run time from 6+ hours to approximately ten minutes per run. All user reports respond to user requests in under one minute. Usage was very solid, with a high level of user adoption and reliance on the EDW data.
