Design & Development Engineering Manager
- Lead of a diverse and talented engineering team at the AeroVironment Energy Efficient Systems division- Significant experience in hybrid electric vehicle drivetrains going all the way back to the development support of the GM EV1- Specialists in power electronic inverters, DC to DC converters, power supplies and accessary digital electronics for complete system integrations or OEM component supplier needs- Experts in battery charging, battery management systems and battery pack testing and intregration for all different chemistries- Leading supplier of in trunk and wall mount EV chargers globally- Can support one off technology projects or high volume commercial component development and production to the toughest quality stardards- Solid reputation as pioneers in the EV business for over 20 years
Director, Advanced Technology
- Lead the technical approach on a DOE sponsored program to develop a dual stage recuperated 370kW turbine engine that pushes the current technology efficiency limits in its size class. Co-developed a process to manufacture a ultra high temperature turbine wheel using a transient liquid phase bonding process to attach single crystal alloy turbine tips to a nickel based alloy hub.- Sole Architect of a scalable lithium titanate battery pack energy storage solution for the Capstone product line. The key design feature was the development of a high voltage variable DC to DC power electronics converter that accommodated the ability to support different battery power and size ranges with a single component for use on multiple product lines.- Lead the technical and commercial development of an exhaust gas driven heat exchanger product that would attach to the top of the existing Microturbine. This required oversight of both the engineering and business aspects of the product that was designed and manufactured by a multi-national Corporations Polish division in nine months to meet a critical company business objective.- Lead a team that developed the next generation Microturbine system controller using a state of the art Power PC processor. This included oversight of all aspects of the process that included: circuit design, PCBA design, PCB manufacturing at an external vendor and operating system procurement and integration.
Director Controls, Software & Electronics
- Created significant improvements to product requirements management, product architecture design, systems controls design, high power electronics controller design, electric motor/generator design, circuit board design/ layout, software design and coding, and product verification/validation to requirements over the two years I was responsible for these teams.- Managed half of the engineering organization and reported directly to the VP of Product Development who reported to the CEO.- Primary architect of a new Product Development Process that incorporated a more modern model-centric approach which streamlined the existing overly complex process that was not being followed.- Developed an engineering tool chain that eliminated non-value added manual documentation steps including the implementation of DO-178B certified software generation tools.
Principal Systems Engineer
- Lead the design engineering effort as the Principal engineer developing a DOE funded 250kW prototype microturbine. Responsible for managing technical side of the project from generating high level requirements to a successful demonstration a prototype test engine in the lab that met the requirements.- Lead the design engineering effort for a prototype hybrid solar collector-microturbine power generation system with a foreign partner company.
