Joshua Bernstein recently joined Amazon Web Services as a Strategic Solutions Architecture Manager. Prior to joining AWS, Josh worked at Dell EMC as the new VP of Technology for the Emerging Technologies Division. Prior to Dell EMC, Joshua ran the Siri Deployment and Infrastructure Architecture team at Apple for 4 1/2 years. As a member of the small team, Joshua and his colleagues successfully took Siri from launch to tens of thousand servers, deploying in dozens of locations worldwide. Prior to working at Apple, Joshua was the senior software engineer at Penguin Computing specializing in design and implementation of large scale distributed systems management software. In addition, he has worked on many high profile NASA missions, including the design for the image processing pipeline of the HiRISE Camera currently on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Joshua is a large contributor Open Source community, contributing to multiple projects including Mesos, HDFS, HBASE, Zookeeper, Samba, OpenMPI, Torque, and the Linux Infiniband Stack. Responsible for middleware provisioning, scheduling, network, and storage architecture and customer facing web portal. Wrote test harnesses, applications and customer facing "appNotes" for configuration our clustering software to best run a number of open-source, custom applications, and proprietary ISV applications. Came up with a trade show demo that booted a full cluster of computers from a USB wristwatch in 8 minutes. Became lead engineer on our Workload Scheduler named "Scyld Taskmaster" which included a proprietary interface to our software but also interfaced with a number of other resource managers such as Torque, SGE, PBS, LSF, and LoadLeveler. Experimented with using TaskMaster to provide adaptive provisioning of enterprise type workloads using Xen and VM-Ware. Worked in the core engineering continuing product development. Technology experience includes MPI, PVM, Bproc and workload scheduling concepts. Application experience includes a wide variety of FEA, CFD, and Life Science applications such as Fluent, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, Abaqus, Nastran, BLAST, Amber, NAMD, and VTK.
