SparkPost was acquired by MessageBird for $600m in May 2021. Post-acquisition I led five other email SRE leads and product owners as we refined and executed our roadmap and addressed 202X-era supply chain shortages and their impact on our ability to expand to meet increasing demand. Specific to that supply chain shortage I was the technical lead for strategies to handle increased volume without additional hardware availability during the 2022 Black Friday / Cyber Monday holiday season. We successfully delivered 1.3x our normal volume each day of the event without a critical incident.

This role included reliability advocacy and policy management for the entire 80 person Engineering organization at a time when outage frequency and severity were on the rise. I evaluated all of our services across critical reliability dimensions, reported on deficits to executive management, and drove adoption of SLOs org-wide. I developed risk management policies to satisfy customer and compliance requirements and enacted them as Change Manager. I rolled out best practice incident response and postmortem processes and trained the engineers on how to use them.I also continued to engage in day-to-day engineering work and led a project to reduce our cloud spend $1m/year by simplifying our sending architecture. I coordinated the Cloud Operations team’s evolution into an SRE team, first as embedded engineers to DevOps teams, then as a unified team focused on core reliability services while providing consulting services to other teams on reliability best practices.

I became the technical lead of the Technical Operations organization and led the migration from our initial “just deploy it in the cloud” model with dozens of separate per customer environments to a consolidated infrastructure with CI/CD, initial microservices, and autoscaling. I also redesigned our DNS from the ground up to meet our increasing load’s conflicts with AWS network limits and presented it at SREcon. I mentored the team through other major projects and guided our growth to a dozen+ engineers.

I joined the new Cloud Operations team tasked with deploying the on-premises Momentum MTA in the cloud. I was responsible for provisioning the full initial cloud environment, from the VPCs on up. I built a fully automated host and service monitoring stack composed of Puppet, Nagios, Cassandra, and Graphite. I developed naming conventions and other standards for our AWS environment that are still in use today.

As one engineer on a team of two I was directly responsible for every aspect of architecture and operations. I designed, implemented, and maintained a multi-datacenter, high-availability Linux and Apache-based web hosting infrastructure. This included centralized logging, monitoring, update management, email, DNS, Apache reverse proxy load balancers, Xen virtualization (in 2007!), etc.The web environment handled 700,000 requests per second across 100 domains, including subdomains of major banks, airlines, and credit card companies. My solution had no single points of failure, no proprietary software, and an operations budget that was orders of magnitude less than the marketing budget. Our consumer-facing sites were advertised on New York city public transit takeovers, the NCAA championships, and the American Idol finale. We stayed online.

SRS Consulting was contracted by a SuperPAC to identify, train, and turn out delegates supporting Ron Paul for President in the 2012 presidential election season. I was engaged as State Project Director and responsible for oversight of all aspects of the project and its success. including determining appropriate training and coordination activities, reviewing reports from data and field coordinators, and ensuring delegates were equipped for success. I supervised five paid staff responsible for data, training, and volunteer coordination. For the State Convention the project fielded 56 volunteer Senate District Coordinators and 65 volunteer Congressional District Coordinators. For the National Convention we fielded 15 core members and coordinators and over 100 volunteers supporting the Paul supporters in the delegation.We were extremely successful, to the point the official Paul campaign chose not to deploy their own delegation coordination operation in Texas. Nearly 30% of the full Texas delegation to the 2012 Republican National Convention were Paul supporters affiliated with our effort. At the National Convention several other states'​ Paul delegations chose to join with the Texas delegation for direction and support due to our organizational and strategic successes, and members of the immediate Paul family remarked that our operation likely had produced better results than the official campaign's.

I deployed and administered an enterprise-wide SSO solution (Oracle Identity / Access) to complement VHA's cross-domain enterprise portal deployment. This deployment provided single sign-on authentication and authorization for 70,000 user accounts accessing dozens of web applications hosted on more than ten domains in three data centers managed by three companies and included active load balancing and failover. Components of this system are still in use, fifteen years later. In my "spare time" I also automated Active Directory user and identity management functions via OpenLDAP-based shell scripts and scripted solutions to extend SSO and the MS authentication infrastructure to Apache on Linux and legacy Lotus Domino web servers.

After the Web Publishing department was merged into MIS, I was made a Sr. Systems Engineer, where I focused on scripting and automation solutions to large systems support problems. Major projects I led included extension of our Nagios monitoring environment to full end-to-end monitoring of our services (including executive dashboard views) and development of an internal system to provide integrated paging and escalation of support tickets to employee phones across multiple carriers (as employees moved from Blackberry pagers to smartphones) similar to modern-day Pager Duty.

I was initially hired as a Web Engineer in the Web Communications Department where I implemented both automated repository-backed content deployments and a user-testing model for evaluating user experience changes.I also became one of the primary go-to people in the company for technology consultation and problem solving and advised the MIS Department on integrated systems solutions, including designing the corporate border email, monitoring, and centralized logging infrastructures. In that role I implemented border anti-virus and anti-spam measures that solved the spam problem in our environment and received international industry recognition (see Publications).I additionally advised and provided oversight for Jr. Sysadmin design and implementation of a centralized Syslog and monitoring system (Nagios) for all enterprise systems, including multiple AIX and Linux servers and 200+ Windows servers across eighteen regional locations. This deployment was eventually the basis for the book Building a Monitoring Infrastructure with Nagios (ISBN 0132236931).
