I started the first Spanish assimilation newspaper in Alabama (and probably the U.S.). While La Voz Local published news articles, its paramount focus was on helping Hispanics assimilate to life in central Alabama. It published how-to articles concerning registering children for school, how to obtain an individual tax identification number, paying and filing taxes, buying and selling a vehicle, etc. In an effort to bridge the communication gap between English- and Spanish-speakers (and as a marketing strategy to obtain more English-speaking advertisers, which proved successful), the newspaper sponsored live, in-person English lessons for non-English speakers and Spanish lessons for non-Spanish speakers.Key achievements: • La Voz Local (The Local Voice) was the first Spanish assimilation newspaper in central Alabama (and probably the U.S.). • La Voz Local was debt-free by its third edition and turned a profit on its fourth edition.

In 2007, I purchased a child-centered approach to musically educating children ages three to five. I taught at local daycare and preschool facilities as well as private schools. Children learned the elements of music--melody, rhythm, form, texture, and harmony--through singing, chanting, playing games, dancing, moving, dramatizing, improvising, and playing xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and unpitched and pitched percussion instruments. Key achievements:• I increased sales by $45,000 in year one of ownership due to a hands-on marketing approach. • I sold the business during the second year I owned it for a profit after only two weeks on the market.
