Jan is the founder and managing director at Sage, a real-estate lending and investment management firm established in 2024 in Durham, NC. At Sage, he is building on two decades of experience originating small- and medium-sized real estate loans; creating and managing real estate private credit funds; and building teams with a culture that allows borrowers, investors and team members to all succeed together.Sage operates primarily in North Carolina and California. It focuses on business-purpose and residential transition loans up to $3 million, a market segment which offers substantial opportunities to make well-structured short-term loans with attractive yields to solid and experienced smaller borrowers. On a limited basis, Sage also provides note financing to other private lenders. Sage is active in the real estate investment community, including in the Urban Land Institute and by organizing educational events with leading players in the North Carolina real estate market.

2023 to present (minority, passive investor)2006 to 2023 (Founder, Managing Director)In 2006, Jan founded Arixa Capital Advisors, LLC and in 2010 launched Arixa’s first lending fund. He remains a Managing Director but does not have any management or operational duties currently. Arixa operates and manages a number of real estate investment funds focused on balance sheet lending to developers who purchase, renovate and/or redevelop residential properties in the U.S., particularly California, Arizona and Texas, where the company maintains offices. Arixa specializes in making small balance loans from $500,000 to $10 million and funding these loans from investment vehicles catering to high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors. As Chief Investment Officer, Jan led the origination and portfolio management of more than $3 billion of real estate loans, before stepping away from day-to-day management in 2023, when he relocated to the East Coast.

Jan joined as Director of Research and went on to be Vice President of Acquisitions, where he sourced, analyzed and structured a wide variety of real-estate investments for the company. During his tenure, he originated both acquisitions and loans secured by multifamily, retail, industrial and land properties. Founded by Samuel K. Freshman, Standard Management has been the launchpad for a number of successful real estate investors and developers.

In 1994, Jan co-founded STV Communications, a media services company providing web broadcasting and hosting services to deliver music, video and live performances through the Internet at a time when most content was delivered only through physical brick-and-mortar stores or traditional broadcasting. Over time, STV’s team grew to 100 employees, before the company was acquired by Sonic Foundry, Inc. in April 2000. Clients of STV included WB Records, Sony Corporation, Microsoft Corporation and kidflix.com.
