AboutWhat a fascinating journey it’s been… and so much more to come!Since the beginning of my agency career, at JWT Detroit in the mid 80s, it’s been about adaptation, re-invention, and innovation. I was an early adaptor to the emergence of digital media in the late 90s. My first digital plan was developed in 1998 for a global client, Bowne & Company (since acquired by R.R. Donnelly), who had a presence throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. In the early 2000s I began to balk at how media was planned and placed – tonnage using simple age and gender targeting parameters. I began pioneering the use of qualitative and lifestyle data in the planning process and adapted it into media buying. This coupled with placement within highly specific media environments proved to be highly effective and produced vastly greater ROI (and less wasted impressions) for clients that I worked with. Execution of this approach was driven by a “right target, right place and right time” mindset, very similar to what the promise of “programmatic” placement was all about – except with greater control and efficacy. As my agency career advanced, I also became a staunch advocate of “integrated” strategic planning. The execution of integrated planning calls for digital, social, traditional media and creative working together as a unified team. To this day, many marketers and agencies still don’t grasp this concept. Sadly, walls between disciplines remain.In more recent years, I began a quest to understand how marketers could make more impactful emotional connections and enhance engagement with their consumers. Biometrics provide that key. Pairing biometric analytics with traditional focus groups enables far deeper insights into true emotional responses. Copy, video and music testing are just a few examples of what biometric testing could be applied to.
