In my current school district, Anderson Community Schools, I have served in multiple capacities. Anderson is a community with diverse needs - the majority of students coming from underprivileged households (78.1% receive free and reduced meals). In my capacity as a teacher, my attitude has been to believe in every student's success and to cultivate relationships with all my pupils. I have applied that philosophy in the middle and high schools, instructing students in introductory Spanish classes, Spanish 1, and even 7th grade Language Arts. I independently designed and implemented a new Introductory Spanish course where I was responsible for instructing students, analyzing their needs, determining intermediate and terminal learning objectives, creating the course syllabus, lesson plans and assessments and evaluating students. In addition, I devised ways to connect learning objectives to students’ everyday lives to increase student engagement, participation and retention.

While teaching at Zionsville Middle School, I was fortunate to broaden my skills with children in seventh and eighth grades. It was a period of tremendous growth in my career due to the large departure from my previous experience. I became familiar with the public school setting including IEP and 504 compliance, Indiana state academic standards, I-STEP+, curriculum development, and common assessment planning. I taught Spanish 1 and 1A.

My university experience at Ohio State and Martin afforded me many opportunities to teach a wide range of beginner, intermediate, and advanced Spanish courses with non-traditional adult learners, undergraduate students, and graduate students from a variety of backgrounds. In addition, I founded and advised the Spanish club at Martin to connect students with Spanish-speakers and Latin American cultures in Indianapolis. My greatest accomplishment was participating in the Martin University team that proposed, received, and implemented a $1.25 million federal grant for the technology to better serve minority students.
