About John Coxon
I've been working in space physics for over a decade, starting at Leicester and now at Northumbria. I have experience in the field of space weather and extensive experience in science communication. I was the lead of the Southampton Planeterrella while I was down south, I led the community as chair of MIST Council, and I was awarded an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship in 2022.My primary scientific expertise is in Birkeland currents, which play a key role in space weather effects on Earth. They are electrical currents which flow between the boundaries of the Earth's magnetic field and the Earth's atmosphere. When the Sun's activity affects the Earth, it is Birkeland currents that relay the effects to the ground, where the impacts can be felt on ground-based infrastructure.Prior to joining Northumbria University in 2022, I was at the University of Southampton from 2015–2022, during which time I worked on Birkeland currents as well as working on substorms and Northward IMF dynamics. I obtained my PhD and first-class MPhys at the University of Leicester between 2007–2015.

Ernest Rutherford Fellow
I am employed by an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship which runs until January 2027. My research will quantify the Earth's reaction to the solar wind, a continuous stream of particles which comes from the Sun and carries magnetic fields with it. The region of space containing Earth's own magnetic field is known as the magnetosphere, and the magnetic fields.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
I started at Southampton working with Caitríona Jackman on examining the energy budgets in the substorm process, publishing two manuscripts on the topic. I then worked with Rob Fear on flux transfer events and subsequently on Northward IMF dynamics, publishing one paper on each. Additionally, I published several papers on Birkeland currents using AMPERE.
