Its premier therapeutic injectable product is Chymodiactin™, a proteolytic enzyme derived from papaya latex, delivered percutaneously to the affected lumbar disc to relieve sciatica pain due to herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP). Once injected into the disc nucleus, rapid hydrolysis of the protein components of the nucleus occurs, providing reduction of osmotic activity and intradiscal pressure, leading to the relief of pressure on nerve roots and relief of the associated pain. In randomized, controlled clinical trials, Chymodiactin™ disc injection has shown comparable effectiveness in treating HNP as compared to surgical intervention. Chymodiactin is curently not available in the US.
